Blanco Gets Wrapped up in Lavender for Christmas
As we move into the fall and winter months, Blanco is turning purple! As the Lavender Capital of Texas® we thought it was time to don the color all year round. Visitors steadily come to town looking for this purple wonder, and they'll find plenty of it the rest of this year during our newest event: Blanco Lavender Lights Celebrate a Hometown Christmas. The kick-off will be Purple Friday, November 28th (the day after Thanksgiving). The day will feature a Lavender Lights Christmas Market on the Courthouse Square, which will continue all weekend long. As night falls, the Courthouse, and the merchants around the square, will light up as they have done for years ... only this time in lavender and white! There will be a children's play at Bindseil Park, horse-drawn carriage rides, caroling on the Courthouse steps, and musicians in many of the shops. Merchants will stay open late, each with their own holiday treats to warm the heart and soul of appreciative guests. Even the Post Office will serve hot chocolate, and the Chamber will serve wine and cheese. Upstairs in the Courthouse, children can meet Santa by the Christmas tree. Uptown Blanco Arts & Entertainment will host the opening of their seasonal art show and sculpture walk. And, all merchants, vendors and guests are encouraged to wear purple! "One reason we are hosting this event," says Blanco Chamber Executive Director Julie Dill, "is that we want to encourage people to shop in Blanco for Christmas this year. I've witnessed so many people making the painful trek into San Antonio or Austin, just to fight the crowds and the traffic and come home exhausted. Blanco stores have some very unique gifts, along with easy access! With the addition of the Christmas Market, and a gift wrapping service in the Courthouse, someone could shop in Blanco over the three days and go home with something for everyone ... already wrapped! And, they will have fun, experience small town community friendliness, and create family memories. It's the fun, the memories, and the true spirit of Christmas that we want people to go home with." "Another reason for the event is to provide people with another opportunity to buy lavender products, not just as gifts, but for themselves! Lavender, of course, is a popular item here in Blanco, and there's no better time

to enjoy the calming quality of lavender than during what is typically the most stressful season of the year. It doesn't have to be that way ... just go purple!" After Purple Friday, the weekend continues with special entertainment, hands-on craft-making classes, carriage rides, the art show, and the Lavender Lights Christmas Market. Hours of the market are Friday from Noon8:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m.6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Drawings will be held for those who make their way to all of the shops and come back to the Chamber of Commerce with proof of their shopping acumen, via a card that gets signed by each shopkeeper (cards can be picked up at all participating merchants). These cards also provide the opportunity to get discounts on limited edition ornaments and "The Local Flavor of Lavender" cookbooks, or a free Blanco County mug filled with hot apple cider. The Blanco Lavender Lights season rounds out with the Starlight Symphony Orchestra playing at the Courthouse on Saturday, December 6 at 7:30pm; the annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 13th at 10:00 a.m.; and the Courthouse Christmas Market Days from 9:00 a.m.4:00 p.m. For more information, contact the Blanco Chamber of Commerce at 830-833-5101, or blanco@moment.net.

Lights SpectacularStyle! Hill Country
The year was 1990 and the Garden Club ladies were at work. "How can we make our little town more festive during the holiday season?" A few cups of tea and these ladies had begun what is now one of the most spectacular holiday light shows in the country. With Norma Honeycutt at the helm, the first "Lights Spectacular, Hill Country Style" was underway. Lights Spectacular continues to receive nationwide recognition. In 2007, Les Thomas' article in Southern Living magazine described Johnson City's Blanco County Courthouse as "the centerpiece of one of the biggest shows on the trail" "shining brighter than the star of Bethlehem". Lights Spectacular, Hill Country Style is a charter member of the Hill Country Lighting Trail featuring lighted communities throughout the Hill Country. For the entire trail, visit www.tex-fest.com/regional/default.htm. That very first year, a decision was made to focus on the community and support local businesses and non-profits. Food and vendor booths continue to be offered to local non-profits and churches, with Lights Spectacular remaining a key community fundraising event. Merchants offer special treats and keep late store hours for the thousands of visitors and horse-drawn carriage rides are available Nov 28 through Dec 28 (except Christmas). The 19th Annual Lights Spectacular, Hill Country Style lasts from Friday, Nov 28 through Thursday January 1. Lights Spectacular is supported by the entire community, continuing to be a marvel to first time viewers or for those who have made it their tradition to travel to Johnson City each Friday after Thanksgiving to view the Courthouse lighting and Saturday evening's Lighted Hooves and Wheels Parade while taking in a free hayride either evening. is something magical about whirling lighted wheels and prancing horses with floats and motorcycles sparking through the night as they wind their way around the Courthouse centerpiece. It's easy to see why this parade has become a holiday tradition throughout the Hill Country and beyond. Down the street, the canopy of lights at Pedernales Electric CooperLiving Nativity photo by Chelita Riley ative makes the event even grander. Over 1 million lights turn the trees around PEC's headquarters into a magical lit forest. One expects elves to pop up behind the trees with a wink. The scene is simply breathtaking. Throughout the community, the city park is transformed into a Winter Wonderland and homes and businesses come alive with traditional and creative lighting on every corner as they compete in the Lighting Contest. Less than five minutes north of Johnson City, a private home presents a Hill Country Lights Display that rivals that of many communities. Each weekend brings different events. On Dec 5-6 and 12-13, Johnson City's First United Methodist Church produces the annual Living Nativity, a live enactment with costumed actors, animals and our community's newest infants. Visitors are provided hot chocolate and refreshments while they view the Nativity collection exhibit. The Living Nativity begins every half hour from 6:30 to 8:30. LBJ National Park's traditional Christmas at the LBJ Boyhood Home (Nov. 29, Dec 6 and Dec 20). and a Timeless Christmas at Johnson Settlement (Dec 13) also participate in the celebration. Imagine visitors' surprise early on when they approached the cabin at Johnson Settlement to find Lady Bird Johnson greeting them with a warm `Howdy!" And, the traditional Christmas Tree Lighting (Dec 21) and Ranch tours in their 39th year continue to bring awe to visitors. New this year is Movies Under the Stars Dec 12. Preparations for Lights Spectacular start months ahead of time. Volunteers dedicate hours stringing lights, businesses create their own light displays, non-profits are busy with crafts and baking. Individual donations and tourism funding underwrite this event each year as new lighting is continually upgraded to make each year more spectacular than the year before. We welcome you to share our tradition! For other special local merchant events, see page 27. For additional events and lodging: 830-868-7684 or www.johnsoncitytexaschamber.com.
