'''American Red Cross Class Saturday'''
Is this what a disaster shelter looks like? Maybe, but not in Blanco County! First, we don’t have the resources to open a big shelter like this, and second, nobody would ask us to. A shelter here would look a lot different from these endless rows of cots. It might just be smaller, or house emergency workers instead of evacuees, or it might not be for overnight stays at all. An American Red Cross class on Saturday will cover what kinds of shelters we might need to open, how they’re different from shelters in other nearby communities, plus the nuts and bolts of how volunteers would do it. Complete the class and you’ll be qualified to volunteer in ARC emergency shelters here, in nearby cities or across the country. The class and discussion will be from 9-4 Saturday morning in the Activity Building of the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. It’s free, but please register with JoAnn at 868-7414 to make sure everyone has class and planning materials. (Red Cross photo)
