'''Garden Club Awards Two Scholarships''' The Community Garden Club has a history of giving back to the community of Johnson City. Usually one scholarship is given each year; however, the Scholarship Committee was able to narrow the applicants down to two but became unwavering regarding the finalists, Philip Linsey and Mason Moreland.

After over two hours of discussion, it was decided to interview both Philip and Mason hoping that this would help in the decision. After meeting these two young men and speaking to them about their goals in life and their achievements through their senior year of high school, the scholarship committee resumed a very lengthy debate to decide which applicant was more deserving of the one $1500 scholarship.

After over ten hours of discussion, arguments, and even tears, the committee members, Christine Schulze (Chairwoman), Jan Phillips, and Diane Beagle were still at a deadlock. It was suggested that the committee make a special request of the Executive Board Members to make a one time allowance of two $1500 scholarships to be awarded to these fine young men to help further their education. By a majority vote, the scholarship committee was given the OK.

One scholarship committee member was quoted as saying “It is heart warming to be able to help young members of our community advance in this way. The ten hours of debate and even the tears shed were well worth it!” Congratulations and the best of luck to Philip and Mason.
