If you have not been to the Blanco Library to see the Storybook Quilt Project display, you need to make a trip over. It is a small display of quilts but it is well worth the 15 minute drive and you could do lunch at the Bowling Alley Café. How long has it been since you have done that? |
DOG DAYS ARE GONE, BUT WHERE IS FALL?
September 25, 2008
Ok, August is behind us and with it the 100 degree weather we hope is too but is fall really on its way? We thought we’d skip a vacation this year and tough it out here at home but after all those months of days in which the temperatures just kept rising we thought we just needed to get out of here and to a cooler place. We just did that. |

If you missed this trip that the Johnson City Library sponsored to visit the Painted Churches in the hill country then you have missed a rare opportunity to see three great and beautiful churches. Each church that we visited was unique and beautiful in its own way and carried with it a story of how it came to be painted and by whom. The painting in the ceilings of the churches were exquisite and except for the last church we visited they were done in soft pastel colors and a lot of gilt paint. |

Identification for volunteers! Improve communication with working volunteers! Ease the load on team managers! Those and other needs and improvements came flying Saturday when the Blanco County Disaster Response Group met to review its “silent” shelter work during Hurricane Ike, and find ways to do a better job whenever the next time comes. Some improvements already came through pure luck. Game Night, the regular Friday night table games that rotates among churches in Johnson City and Stonewall, by chance was scheduled for the First United Methodist Church the same night six evacuees arrived seeking shelter. The quick decision both games and shelter would go forward, and the guests joined in the games with a hot round of dominoes. Lesson: Whenever we open a shelter, round up table-game players to help keep shelter guests entertained. The food-service team had snacks and light meals for short-term guests, but if we had to open for full service, we’d need heavier-duty cooking. |

Tim Kimmel, who along with his wife, Darcy, is a frequent speaker at our Weekend to Remember marriage conferences, remembers the two of them going out to eat sometime around his fortieth birthday. As they were waiting for their meal to arrive, he began doodling a crude picture of a casket on his paper napkin. Turning it around to face his wife, he asked, “Darcy, how many people does it take to carry one of these things?” “I don’t know,” she answered. |
