Tony and Gayla Stevenson of Boerne are proud to announce the upcoming marriage of their son, Adam, to Kenna Allen, daughter of Kevin and Ronda Allen of Coleman, Texas. Adam is a 07 Boerne H.S. graduate and a 2011 graduate of Tarleton State University with a degree in Criminal Justice.

On March 3, 2012 the Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department is teaming up with the Fire Corps to host an Open House for all of the Community. They are planning this to take place from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Fire Station located on Live Oak Drive. The Open House is to Celebrate paying off the building in July of 2011.

On Friday, February 3, 2012 there was a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of our newest and largest convenience store in Johnson City. Before the ribbon cutting ceremony, Steve DeSutter, President and CEO of Stripes, spoke and introduced several individuals that were on hand to represent Johnson City and the Stripes family.

The Quilter’s Guild started out this New Year by greeting our Winter Texan guilders and each other with completed projects and new ideas. 39 Ouch Pouches were taken to Marble Falls and 57 preemie quilts made for Threads of Love. Instructions for making a pocket wallet was given, these can be made in a day.

Ooohh..my…it is cool this morning and my bones feel it. I think I am ready for the weather to get warmer, but I am also ready for rain. Who watched the Super Bowl on Sunday? Final score was Giants 21, Patriots 17. My favorite part, even though I hate to admit it, is the commercials.

Our dog, Polly Smith, just had her first birthday this past December and we just celebrated our first whole year with Polly as our number 2 dog. A year ago we ventured out to Christ Yoder Animal Shelter and this cute little brown, white and black spotted dog climbed to the top of a 5 pup pile of her siblings and said, “Take me, take me.” We did.

On Tuesday, February 07, the Johnson City City Council convened in their regular monthly meeting. However, an aura of serious business filled the air as the meeting time marched near. At 20 minutes till 6:00 the parking lot was already overflowing with vehicles. At 5:55 pm there wasn’t any available seating left in the City Hall meeting council room.

Dated September 15, 2011, a letter went out to the various taxing entities served by the Blanco County Central Appraisal District (BCAD) stating, in essence, that the board had investigated the matter of tax certificate fees and earned interest that had been accumulated by the District over time and had concluded that this money should be returned to the taxing entities that participated in the District during the years in which it accumulated.

Former President, and local hero, Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.” As the Republican Primary Election heats up across the nation, local election candidates in Johnson City are also deciding whether or not they would like to serve as a city councilperson or on the JCISD school board.

I’m talking about the Old West Casino Night that will take place at the Blanco County Show Barn on Thursday, February 23rd. Tickets are on sale now and seating is limited. Last year this was a sellout event and will be again this year. We have added some additional seating to allow more folks to enjoy this exciting event, however if you wait until the last day you will most likely be out of luck.

Mark your calendars – Saturday, March 3, 2012 - this the day for The Spaghetti Dinner and Bingo Benefit for the library sponsored by the Johnson City Woman’s Civic Club. This event requires lots of planning by the members of the club, but it is successful each year because of the many wonderful community underwriters and supporters.

The Change-the-World crew was out again in Johnson City last weekend, doing chores for people who couldn’t do them or themselves. Paul Axtell was one of the Lions Club members who teamed up with the First United Methodist Church to trim cedar, take down Christmas lights and fix doors for local residents.

John was born in Blanco, Texas on June 30, 1949. He was raised in Hye, Texas. He graduated from LBJ High School in Johnson City; following graduation he served his country with the US Army during the Vietnam War. John spent many years farming turkey, following that he became a floor layer throughout Central Texas.

Mr. Richard Barrientes of Johnson City, Texas, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2012, at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 38. Ricardo was born December 9, 1973, in Fredericksburg, Texas, to Lawrence Barrientes and Claudia Irma Rodriguez Barrientes. He married Holly Streeter on June 18, 1998, in Fredericksburg, Texas.

In the book of Judges we learn that God’s people drifted into apostasy again and again, worshipping idols and serving false gods (Judges 2:10-11). God, in His infinite wisdom, would chastise His people by allowing the surrounding nations to oppress them. God’s people would eventually turn back to Him and cry out for His protection.

Congratulations to LBJ Fighting Eagle Band students, Senior Brandon Adams, Junior Amara Yachimski, Sophomore Jose Mesa, Junior Fabian Weirich and Sophomore Lydia Yachimski on their Division 1 rating at the Solo and Ensemble contest at Hays High School this past Saturday. Brandon and Amara earned the privilege of advancing to the All State University Interscholastic League Solo and Ensemble contest to be held in May.

The LBJ Eagle varsity boys basketball finished up their first round of district play this past Friday, Feb 3 with a 44-20 victory over the Center Point Pirates on parent’s night. The first quarter was very tight but the Eagles outscored Center Point 12-4 in the second quarter for a 21-11 halftime lead.

The Lady Eagles Middle School basketball team played in a tournament in Mason this past weekend. The Lady Eagles “B” team won their first game in the tournament against Medina 16-15. Top scorers were Kaitlyn Arveson and Skylar McKennis who both scored 4 points. Dominique Requenes, Karli Metcalf, and Alyssa Rose also scored 2 points.

The Johnson City Eagles MS teams competed this week in the District 29A tournament held in Mason. The seventh grade boys competed first against a Pirates team who played the Eagles well and kept the score close throughout. Kyle Porter sank a 3 pointer as the first half expired to give the Eagles an 18-15 advantage at half time.

Hill Country Memorial (HCM) and Jennifer Dulaney, M.D., are cosponsoring the twelfth annual “Girl Talk” seminar Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Fredericksburg Elementary School Cafeteria, 1608 N. Adams Street, starting at 6:30 p.m. The free seminar is designed for young women ages eight and older and their moms or other female caregivers.
