The Dean’s List for the 2011 Fall Semester has been announced at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, students must be enrolled full-time and maintain a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. SUGAR AND SPICE AND EVERYTHING NICE.....Kip, Sandi, Quaid and Gavin proudly announce the birth of their daughter and sister, Brisa Marie Thompson. Brisa was born at St. David’s Women’s Center in Austin on January 6th at 8:14 a.m. She weighed 7 pounds and was 19 1/4 inches long. Grandparents include Sam and Marie Watson of Goldthwaite and Nancy Thompson of Johnson City.

SNIPS AND SNAILS AND PUPPY DOG TAILS.....Max Joseph Sanders was born in San Antonio on December 21, 2011, at 1:20pm. He weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce, and was 20 3/4 inches long. He is welcomed by his parents, Kelly and Gretchen Sanders of Blanco; big brother Jake; and grandparents Jim and Marla Sanders of Blanco, and Jerry and Frances Leist of Angleton.

The Women’s Auxiliary to the Texas Sheep and Goat Raiser’s Association, Hill Country Chapter are once again offering scholarship opportunities to area high school seniors and current university juniors, seniors and graduate students. Deadline to apply is April 1 and no late applications will be accepted. Jared Emmitt Spears a 2011 Honors Graduate of LBJ High School will be honored on January 24, 2012 at the Art Institute of Austin campus for his academic achievement. By achieving a 4.0 grade point average for the Fall Quarter he has been named to the President’s List. Jared is enrolled in the Audio Technology Bachelors Degree Program and will graduate in 2015.

On January 8, nine girls from Johnson City competed at the Cheer America competition in Austin representing the Elite Cheer Company. They are on teams ranging from Sizzlers (level 1 show team), Wildfire (senior level 2), to Crossfire (youth level 3) as well as one on Sol (senior hip hop dance team).

The Community Garden Club met last Thursday for their first meeting of the New Year, welcoming members was President Lynda McDow. The club met in the new courthouse annexes Hoppe room, which is part of the district courtroom. After a business meeting, Todd Swift presented a program on Gardening in the drought, reminding all of us with the recent rainfall we were not out of drought conditions.

The Stonewall Heritage Society will be meeting next Tuesday, January 24, at 7 PM at the Stonewall Heritage Center, 126 Elberta St., Stonewall, Tx. The featured speaker is Greg Smith with L&L Drilling who will speak about his experiences drilling wells in the Texas hill country. Refreshments will be served at the end of the meeting.

The San Antonio Livestock Exposition (S.A.L.E.) Ambassador Committee participates in community goodwill tours promoting the Stock Show and Rodeo each January. They made a little stop in Johnson City where they were greeted by the Extension Agency along with members of the Johnson City FFA, Chamber of Commerce and many other community members.

Larry Williams stands beside the wood forms into which he hopes to pour the slab for his new house, replacing the one that burned in the Labor Day wildfires at Spicewood. He’s not sure whether his tools will be sufficient to the job of spreading and smoothing the concrete, and whether there will be anyone to help him.

“The Subway burglary in Johnson City has been solved,” reported JCPD Chief of Police Randy Holland. “A confidential agreement has been made between the restaurant owner, Robin Gilliland, and the person or persons responsible for the theft of $1,024,” he said. Chief Holland investigated the burglary and reported his findings to Gilliland.

The spring session for the Johnson City Library’s Discovery Academy is about to start. Discovery Academy is an afterschool enrichment program in science and math. Students learn through hands-on experiments and building prototypes. Every Tuesday and Thursday, as soon as school is out, class starts with a healthy snack. We meet in the middle school portables for the afternoon fun and students are ready to be picked up at 5:15.

They looked like a bunch of Eskimos, bundled up against the freezing temperature and brisk wind, but a group of Blanco County’s wheelchair ramp volunteers went to Marble Falls Thursday to help the crew there build a 44-foot ramp. These builders included Jack Ragsdale of Marble Falls, left, Harry Conger of Blanco and Pastor Lee Romero of the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City.

The Blanco County 4-H & FFA Youth Council would like to announce that Odiorne Feed & Ranch Supply in Johnson City, has made a generous donation of a bale of shavings per exhibitor and shavings for the Youth Show starting January 26th. Exhibitors may go by Odiorne Feed & Ranch Supply in Johnson City to pick their bale of shavings.

A preacher gave an unusual sermon using a peanut as a visual aid as he talked about evidence of God in creation. One of the members greeted him at the door and said, “Very interesting, preacher, I never expected to learn so much from a nut.” Paul the apostle was one of the great teachers of New Testament times.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is described as the “perfect law of liberty” (James 1:25) which calls us “unto liberty” (2 Thessalonians 2:14; Galatians 5:13). When a sinner obeys the truth of the Gospel they are set free from the bondage of sin (John 8:32). While we can be set free by obeying the Gospel, we are not at liberty to do whatever we want (Galatians 5:17).

These three projects were shown at the Hill District Ag. Mechanics show over the weekend in Kerrville. They will be in the Blanco County Stock Show January 26th thru 28th. All three projects got blue ribbons and Kelly Wright won her class and was division champion. She was one of only three projects in the entire show that got a purple ribbon.

Congratulations to All Region Band Members Brandon Adams, Fabian Weirich, Amara Yachimski, Jose Mesa and Katelyn Barrientes. These students competed against Regions 18 and 26 band students last month to win a chair in the All Region Symphonic and Concert bands. They will be participating in a Region Clinic and Concert this Friday and Saturday at Texas State University in San Marcos.

LBJ High School junior Melinda Holdridge was recently invited to attend the Abeline Christian University’s Honors College Summer Academy. During her week long course, she will participate in debate and will be taught how to debate by National Champion Speech and Debate team. To be accepted in this program shows an academic talent and a drive to excel.

The LBJ Eagle varsity boys basketball team suffered a close, tough loss to the Harper Longhorns this past Tuesday, January 10 at LBJ gym. The Eagles controlled the first half taking a 27-18 lead at halftime. However, LBJ suffered a scoring slump throughout much of the second half while Harper caught fire from 3 point range and came away with a 46-40 victory.

Eligible Pedernales Electric Cooperative members interested in running for a position on the Co-op’s Board of Directors can now obtain the petition materials needed to seek the nomination. PEC directors are democratically elected by the Cooperative’s membership. Positions up for election in 2012 are District 1 director, District 6 director and District 7 director.
