Hi folks. I hope everyone had a great weekend. I got to go on a mini vacation to the coast to see two of my daughters. I had a wonderful time, but it was very hot. It seems that our rain is not around, perhaps, we need a big rain dance to encourage some rain.
I spent time listening to Obama giving his speech in Austin, TX on Monday.

To tell the truth, I’d just as soon have neither around my place; mice or snakes. It seems we have both. I can’t decide which to eradicate. The snakes keep down the mouse population, but the mice make a mess on my porch among the bench pillows. I am more afraid of the snakes and, it seems, they both live in the dense dark shade of my periwinkle ground cover.
As you know, the mice have found their way into my car and eaten some mints and even a couple of Rolaids ...

Coming home from Llano we came in the back way and stopped at the shop in Kingsland. I bought fabric of course. You know that saying, "Whoever dies with the most fabric wins", well I am doing my best to be a winner. We visited there for a while and headed on into Marble Falls to the shop there.

Planet Parade and Perseid Meteor Shower
Let’s hope for clear skies the next couple of weeks as Mother Nature has a double-header in store — an evening planetary show back-to-back with the Perseid meteor shower. (The only thing missing will be a Roadrunner cartoon — remember them?)
For the first show, all five naked-eye planets will appear in our evening sky, four at the same time.

2010-2011 School Year Fast Approaches
I know you love your children very much. In fact there isn’t anything that you wouldn’t do for your son or daughter – but let’s face it. There’s just something about that first sight of the "Back to School" aisle at Wal-Mart that makes you grin like the Grinch at Christmas time.

"Will work for food", even when they don’t get to keep any of it! Betty and Jerry Charniak run the Johnson City food pantry, but a family emergency called them out of town just before the August distribution to almost 100 families. Who could step in and see that hungry folks got their food on schedule?

Folks in the far north and far western portions of Texas will not identify much with our fire ant fights. These complex insects have left those parts of the state alone, while infesting the hill country and almost all counties around us.
This problem is a baptism by fire ant for gardeners who have not faced the problem before.

Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the proposed closing of the recycle center by the City Council. Many of us in the community rely on the center for our recycling needs. It is a wonderful service that Johnson City provides. In these times of great concern for the planet: oil spills, global warming, and carbon emissions; our community must continue any and all efforts to support our environment.
