Hill Country Memorial Hospital will offer a Good Health School on the benefits of anterior approach hip replacement Tuesday, Nov. 3, at noon, at the Hill Country Memorial Hospital Women’s Pavilion. The class will be taught by Orthopedic Surgeon P. Charles Romanick, MD, of Texas Hills Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, P.A.

Clubs & Organizations

The Christmas J.O.Y. (Johnson City Outreach for Youth) program is currently accepting applications from families in need of their services for this upcoming holiday season. The outreach program is intended to assist families who have children that will not receive anything this holiday season in hopes of providing at least some Christmas joy for the family this year.
Johnson City Quilt Guild held its last meeting for 2009 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Johnson City last Thursday night. We will pick up again on January 28, 2010 and will begin making plans for our quilt show. We met with 15 members and 3 visitors present. Anjanette brought her mother, Janice Morton and our youngest guest ever, her 4 day old daughter, Cora.
Karen Brugnoli’s beautiful hilltop home was the setting for the October meeting of the Johnson City Woman’s Civic Club on Monday, October 26th. Hostesses were Karen Brugnoli, Diane Burke, Gwen Portie, Sandy Thompson and Kristina Kernick. Halloween treats and pumpkin cupcakes were served as members and guests arrived. The Round Mountain EEA Club met in the home of Marjorie Reagor on October 21, at 2:00. The meeting was called to order by President, Barbara Wilson. We had 14 members, 3 guests and our county agent present. Roll call was answered by naming your favorite fall recipe. Frankie Hohenberger gave the Council Report.

Well, we had an awesome weekend. The weather was unbelievable. And for this Monday morning, we woke up to rain and cooler weather. Our creeks, rivers, and lakes still need more water and every bit helps to contribute to that. I am sure our firemen are enjoying the most deserved rest from all the fires.
Continuing our trip to Houston, it is Sunday morning. Breakfast buffet was great. Our group met after breakfast around 9:45 am by the piano to get our instructions for the day and this was the time for drawing of the blocks to be given away. Louise won a set of blocks and Vickie won a door prize from our bus.

More than 150 Blanco County residents lined up for their flu shots last week, as public anxiety about vaccine supplies grew and the president prepared to sign a health emergency declaration. The public anxiety was because supplies of the H1N1 swine flu vaccine still are only trickling out, and unusually early and heavy demand for seasonal flu vaccine caused spot shortages across the country. The Friends of the Library will be having a huge book sale during the open house of the library November 9th through the 14th. This is the first of many fund raisers for the Friends, whose mission is to promote community support of the library and retire the mortgage debt.

Obituaries

Alva K. Johnston, 70, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at his home in Johnson City, TX. He was born in Saltsburg, PA to Thomas Johnston and Katherine Knickenboker Johnston. Alva graduated from Saltsburg High School in 1957. Soon after graduating from High School, Alva joined, served, and was honorably discharged from the U.S.
Melvin L. Haertner, 62, passed away October 23, 2009. Melvin was born August 20, 1947 in Barbarosa, TX to Herman and Laura Haertner. He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Melvin retired from PEC where he worked for 36 years as a Lineman. He worked at the Marble Falls PEC location for 25 years. Melvin is survived by his wife, Rebecca; son, Shane Haertner of Blanco; and daughter, Melba Smith and husband Chris of Johnson City.
