Bring the whole family for a weekend of fun at LBJ Ranch Oct. 10-11. The fun run and bike with Luci events are designed to bring families together for a weekend of fun activities at LBJ Ranch near Stonewall. The weekend benefits local education programs sponsored by the Friends of LBJ National Park and the Johnson City Community Education Foundation. On Saturday, Oct.

Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center will offer a prostate cancer blood-draw Tuesday, Oct. 6, to facilitate early detection and potentially increase survival rates among local men. The draw will be at the Wellness Center between 7 and 9 a.m. Fee is $35 to cover lab costs. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited.
In a meeting streamed live on the Internet, Pedernales Electric’s Board of Directors voted on Monday to distribute up to $4 million in capital credits to its members. The Board also decided to extend the waiver of the $100 reconnection fee through the end of 2009. Capital credits accumulate when revenues exceed expenditures, and those credits are allocated to members based on their electric use.
The 24th annual St. Joseph’s Halle Fall Craft Show will open Saturday, October 3, from 9:00 am to 5 pm. Artisans from across the Hill Country will have hand crafted products at the free show in the historic limestone St. Joseph’s Halle at 212 W. San Antonio Street, next to St.
We invite you to join us this Sunday, October 4, 2009 beginning at 11am for a scrumptious homemade Mexican dinner. Tickets are $7 per person and include cheese enchiladas, tamale, taco, rice, beans, tortilla, homemade salsa and a dessert. Children under 6 eat for free. We will have Bingo today and this is always a lot of fun and a lot of laughter going on. We had a lot of different Bingo prizes along with some treats. Let’s see, cookies, cookies, cookies, tea, and coffee. We are expecting another cold front today. We hope it brings with it some rain.
On our way to see the lighthouses we found another great shop. My new suburban can do a real fine u-turn. Windham, Maine is where you will find Calico Basket Quilt Shop. They have over 5000 bolts of fabric here and so many patterns you will be in awe. It was great.
It Was A Dark And Story Night
We have had some wonderful stormy, windy evenings when the sky was dark and the wind blowing and rain pelting down on our tin roof. We are storm lovers and we will sit out and watch the weather gathering until the closest lightening strikes a bit too close. I think it was an evening like this that we were in and out of all our doors all over our home, even the one in the living room that we don’t often use but in the excitement of watching the rain we opened it, or I did. *****Pat & Dave Ripson drove to Wilmer, Texas and picked up their son Jim Hyatt for a short time as he was heading for North Carolina. He did a few plumbing chores around the house for them. They took him to Riley’s for dinner. They went for a ride in the Torch Red Mustang Convertible and Jim and Pat agreed that they could get in a lot of trouble with that fun machine.

The new H1N1 flu — the swine flu — is a disease to be taken seriously, but not one which ought to cause panic. That was the key message from Mark Rogers, RN, Director of Care Management at Hill Country Memorial Hospital System in Fredericksburg. “Most people who catch the new flu will simply have a case of flu,” Rogers told the meeting at Community Church of the Hills in Johnson City.

Sally Armstrong of Donkey-Oaties Miniature Donkeys in Johnson City has returned from the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was accompanied by Sonja Hartmann, also of Johnson City. Armstrong took two of her miniature donkeys to compete in the fair’s donkey & mule show on September 16th. Short ASSet’s She’s Mav-a-lous, a three-year-old jennet, lived up to her name.

Obituaries

David Neal Uecker, 49, passed away at his home near Johnson City Sunday, September 27, 2009 in Johnson City. David was born in Fredericksburg to Welmuth “Buddy” Uecker and Dorothy Lindig Uecker. He was preceded in death by his father Buddy Uecker. David is survived by his mother, Dorothy; brother, Myron Uecker and wife Mary of Johnson City; sister, Brenda Stone & husband Austin of Tularosa, NM; and aunt, Elizabeth Crenwelge of Fredericksburg.
Dawn Cox, age 85, passed away on Sept. 27, 2009 at her home on the ranch in Blanco, TX. She is preceded in death by her husband Sidney Cox. Visitation is Fri. Oct. 2, 2009 12 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. The funeral will be Sat. Oct. 3, 2009 1:00 P.M.

School

Seniors lead the way.....Last Thursday was the community wide pep rally at the football field. The Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department provided escort for the 2009 football team, volleyball team, and cheerleaders. (pictured above). This was just the beginning for a grand weekend in Johnson City. Friday morning all campuses were open for tours for returning alumni.

Sports

The Eagles had a great start offensively Friday night, as Junior quarterback Cody Smith threw for four touchdowns in the first quarter. He was able to complete a 5th touchdown pass in the second period. First quarter yardage was made by Junior Laramie Blackwell 34 yards, Junior Aaron Humphrey 15 yards, Junior Luke Neely and Junior Kris McDonald 37 yards.
The Lady Eagles continue to impress with their winning streak. Last Tuesday night the Lady Eagles met with San Antonio Cole getting another victory with a four game match, 25-16,25-22,26-28, and 25-19. Kourtney Smith had 15 assists matching up with Adrienne Pabon’s 14 kills. Great serving from Bailey Zoeller also helped the Lady Eagles win.
The LBJ Middle School Volleyball teams played Harper this past Monday here at the E.J. Hyatt Gym. The gray team lost a close match to the Lady Horns. Serving was led by Amber Litchfield. The White team also lost a hard fought match to the Lady Horns in two games.

Texas grocery shoppers continue to collect on savings in 2009, according to the latest results from Texas Farm Bureau’s Grocery Price Watch. Food prices in the third quarter of the year rang in at an average of $50.46, which is 75 cents or 2 percent cheaper than the same 16 pantry staples cost three months ago in the Lone Star State. “While savings at the grocery aisle do indeed benefit all of us in Texas, I believe it is also important to note that these lower food prices are coming at ...
