Clubs & Organizations

What is a book club? We all know what a club is...they have various names, they are for all ages, and people of common interest. I’m sure all of you belong to or have belonged to some sort of club or organization in your lifetime. In your school yearbooks it always listed the clubs you belonged to beside your picture.

Here we are, back at the porch and watching for rain. We get so excited if we see a sprinkle that we want to take a picture of it. Now, that is truly sad. We had our Tenant Association Meeting on Tuesday. We had a wonderful turnout for this and we had some cake, coffee, and tea to serve.
Curiosity Quilts are one-of-a-kind flights of fancy. One such quilt was made and entered in a contest sponsored by Sear and Roebuck in 1933. This was the start of what we know as a Quilt Show and the idea formed very quickly as a way to show off your labors of love.
My Friend Patsy
What can I say about my friend Patsy who lives in Baytown, except that she is a neat person, a clean person, and always prepared for any eventuality? But we all have a friend like Patsy, don’t we? Right here in Johnson City I can think of at least three and I bet if you don’t know these particular three women, you will know one like them in your circle of friends.
*****Jewell Sultemeier went to Llano on Monday to play 42 with her children at her daughter’s house. B.J.’s daughter, Savanna, has gone to Menard to their church camp for this week and Mattie has gone to her aunt and uncle’s in Magnolia for the week. B.J. and Amber won’t have anything to do all week. *****Harry and Patty Carpenter had a short but sweet visit from their granddaughter, April Stevens on Wednesday.

Community News

“I sound muffled? Listen, I can’t even BREATHE through this mask without fogging my glasses, much less talk on the telephone!” Pastor Sid Spiller and secretary JoAnn Routh tested working conditions using the new supply of face-masks and plastic gloves at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. The protective items are an amusing nuisance now, but will become essential if the swine flu takes hold in the community.
While some think of swine flu as “the pandemic that didn’t happen”, public health professionals see it as “the pandemic that’s about to happen”, and local groups are preparing to help their neighbors get through a flu season that could sicken thousands and kill dozens — in Blanco County alone. It’s not a cause for panic, they emphasize, but a dose of awareness and preparation will go a long way toward keeping your family from becoming an unpleasant statistic. “It’s very ...
Several residents of Blanco County have been informed of winning lottery/sweepstakes contests etc. only to find out they were scammed. The scammers have become increasingly creative in their scamming campaigns, and are providing materials that appear extremely realistic. One resident received an unsolicited check in the mail, delivered by UPS, with their name on it, for a large sum of money.

Opinion & Letters

Ignorant and cowardly act of defacing public property
Dear Editor, This letter is in reference to the recent ignorant and cowardly act of defacing public property at the Johnson City Recycling Center wherein a person or persons unknown painted racial slurs, swastikas, and KKK on a recycling bin. By virtue of what was done, this action constitutes a hate crime under both state and federal statutes.
This is a wonderful community!
Dear Editor, Since last week’s edition went to press, I learned exactly how our house was saved from the grassfire of the 26th and who was responsible for saving it. This is a wonderful story to share with our community and to give commendation where it is well-deserved! We were not home when the call went out at about 2:50 p.m.

Even parents can’t escape school tests.
