Goodness, here comes July 2009. I cannot believe how the year is flying by. We will be celebrating July 4th on Saturday this year. And this got me to thinking about who actually signed the Declaration of Independence. I did a little research and found http://wiki.answers.com for my answer. This is what I found as to who signed the Declaration of Independence and it took 56 signatures.
Shop with a friend……… When you are planning a trip to the quilt shop take a few friends with you and save on the gas. With the economy the way it is and gas prices still climbing, it only makes sense to combine your trips and take your friends. It is always more fun to shop for fabric with friends because they can always offer their opinion when you need it and the owner can’t find the time to help you make that decision on if that color goes good with what you need.
Sorting Out the Greek Gods
The planets along with several constellations and other night sky objects are named for gods of ancient Greece, although most are now known by their counterpart in later Roman religion. Sorting out the relationship among the gods is complicated as most religious stories from antiquity have multiple versions, yet we’ll introduce some of the better-known members of this family of Greek gods (with their Roman names in parentheses). It all began in a void of nothingness called Chaos, out of w ...
Of Mice And Men And Women
I guess men scratching or spitting and women screaming have no rhyme or reason but I do know its something both do and maybe without thinking, instinctively maybe. I see it and I hear it. I have never asked a man why he scratches or spits but I do know when I scream, whether it’s from fright or an exclamation of happiness, that I do it and therefore I think it is an auto response of some kind.

After reviewing declining water levels in District Monitor Wells, lower than normal rainfall, the lack of flow in local creeks and rivers, and future weather forecasts, the Blanco Pedernales Groundwater Conservation District Board of Directors has raised drought conditions in Blanco County to more severe stages. The following hydrograph of one Monitor Well shows how current water levels are lower than the water levels were during Stage Two Drought condition in 2006. In addition, drought indic ...
With dried up creek beds and tanks going dry the drought conditions have everyone in the county praying for rain. We received some rain early in the week, but just enough to knock the dust off. The county is under a burn ban and a fireworks ban because of our drought situation, please don’t think that just because it rained a little that it is OK to break these bans that are put in place for your safety and the safety of your neighbors.

Expert recommends more care in handling, preparation and storage
Ants aren’t the only little creatures that can spoil a summer picnic, said a food safety expert with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. “Another thing that can spoil a picnic or other outing is food-borne bacteria from improperly handled, prepared or stored foods,” said Rebecca Dittmar, AgriLife Extension associate for food protection management. “Hot temperatures accelerate the production of bacteria that contain toxins which may cause food poisoning,” Dittmar said.
King Solomon’s call for moral and spiritual integrity by citizens for the benefit of their nation may seem out of date but his principle of practicing patriotism by doing right needs to be stressed and heeded: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). The history of both the United States and Canada prove the importance of spiritual awakenings to turn the tide of moral and spiritual decay and usher in good times. In 1727, twenty four year ol ...

The Texas Farm Bureau today congratulated Sen. Craig Estes for introducing Senate Bill 10 for consideration in the Special Session of the Texas Legislature, which will convene Wednesday. SB 10 deals with eminent domain reform, which was only partially addressed in the regular session. “SB10 is essentially the same legislation that Senator Estes filed as SB18 in the regular session,” said TFB President Kenneth Dierschke.
The current drought has many producers attempting to salvage failed sorghums, sudans and similar crops by grazing or baling the stover for later use as animal feed. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service Soil, Water and Forage Testing Laboratory (SWFTL) has received numerous corn and sorghum samples containing highly elevated nitrates, often at levels significantly high enough to prevent safe use of the forage.
Buying organic. Shopping locally. Driving less. All are great ways to express your individual commitments to our living Earth. But what about Fido, Spot and Clyde? Are there ways to help “green” our pets’ impact on the planet? That’s an affirmative “woof!” The Nature Conservancy offers some suggestions to assist in greener pet ownership. To begin with, buy pet products that are made from recycled materials and look for toys and accessories made of non-toxic ingredients and susta ...
An amazing group of individuals participated in the 2009 Master Gardener training classes. Once completing their over 50 hours of instruction at the end of March, they began earning volunteer hours. They have been an active volunteer force in our community since then. Watch for them! They carry pruning shears, wear hats and gloves and show up where plants are in need.

Dear Editor: My husband and I drove in from Austin on Father’s Day to take my Dad (who drove in from Kerrville) to lunch at the Silver K Café. It was our first time to dine there and it was fabulous. We said our goodbyes and hopped in our vehicles to head back to our respective homes, but as we’re pulling out we notice my Dad running over to us hollering his truck won’t start.
