Stonewall—Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park invites the public to attend a free movie screening of Will Penny, a 1968 Western starring Charleton Heston, on Saturday, June 13 at 9 pm. The movie will be projected onto an 18 by 25 foot outdoor screen that includes a professional sound system.
The Johnson City Chamber of Commerce invites all Johnson City residents to the Ribbon Cutting for Mainstreet Boutique on June 13, 2009 at 10:00 am. The family owned and operated Boutique opened at their new location, 106 E. Main, on May 2. Johnson City’s exclusive women’s boutique features ladies clothing, jewelry and accessories including, unique, comfortable, casual & business casual.
Mark your calendars for June 20th, Saturday, when Eco-Day 2009 will be held at the Henly South Fire Station on FM 2325 at Plainview Road, across from Hill Country Ranches (the White Rabbit). Sponsored by Hill Country Ranches Property Owners, the second annual Eco-Day will feature one-hour presentations from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm.
Head to Toe Dance Company, Dripping Springs is coming to Johnson City. Get out those tu-tu’s and ballet shoes and join Anne Barker for some fun dance camps. Ms. Anne comes from Dripping Springs with 10 years of teaching experience. The camps will be held at the First United Methodist Church.
Amelia Koplos, daughter of Greg and Jenifer Koplos of Johnson City is a recipient of the Dean’s Award for academic excellence during the 2009 spring term at Colgate University, where she is a member of the Class of 2010. A 2006 graduate of Del Valle High School, Milly is a double-major in Africana Studies and Music.
SEGUIN – Texas Lutheran University held its spring commencement at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 9, in ceremonies on the Chapel Lawn. A total of 167 students received bachelor degrees during the university’s annual spring commencement. Among the graduates was Dylan Gravenor Ginn of Johnson City, who graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in math and physics.
Michelle Ann Sultemeier, a resident of Johnson City has graduated and received her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration in May 2009 from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

Columns

We have a couple of tenants out of pocket due to surgery. We will report on their progress next week. For all of you that had a hot weekend do not forget to put a prayer in for some rain this next week. For anyone in and around Johnson City, do not forget our Combined Community Action, which is our Meals on Wheels program.
Picnic quilts are my subject today. You can use your favorite old quilt or you can make a picnic quilt very easily. You can use the charm packs or layer cake packs we talked about last week. Several years ago I purchased a kit on the Quilt Hop that was titled “Oma’s Picnic Quilt”.
All Over Hell And Half Of Georgia
I had to check on my favorite reference venue to see if my column title would make sense to my readers. What I found out is that at least in the southern states it is a well know statement for someone who has ‘looked and looked’ for something or someone. Actually we never looked through half of Georgia when we were looking for a place to buy for our retirement.
*****On Monday night, June 1st, Beverly Voron, Mary Weirich, Julie Moses, and Savannah Elkins attended a concert at the concert hall of the Baylor University School of Music. It was a joint venture by Joyce Jones, concert artist, head of Baylor’s organ department and one of the world’s finest organists, and Kurt Kaiser, Christian composer of such pieces as “Pass It On” and “Oh, How He Loves You and Me,” arranger, and marvelous pianist who has been a part of Baylor for 50 years.

The Writers’ League of Texas is pleased to partner with the Johnson City Library and the LBJ National Historic Park to present a daylong writing seminar and book signings with authors Diana López, Mark G. Mitchell, and Tweed Scott. This inaugural event is for writers of all levels and for those who are interested in the writing of others.
Josh Gissel of the Johnson City Record Courier was named to the Media Honor Roll, a program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), by the Johnson City Independent School District. The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide who deserve recognition for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools.

The Johnson City Food Pantry fundraiser performance by the Second Act Troupe raised $502 for the Food Pantry. The Second Act Troupe, a group of seasoned actors (55 and over) put on one act plays. There was a full house for the performance. Laughter was abundant as the actors delivered their performances in an award winning manner. The First Methodist Church hosted the performance.
Johnson City Quilt Guild met in May and Janie presented our program. She showed us how to make a shoulder purse from jelly roll strips. A strip is 2 ½ inches x width of the fabric; usually 45 inches wide. These little purses are great for quilt hops and shows when all you want to carry is your cash, credit card, and cell phone.

Farm, Ranch & Garden

Brightly colored fabrics, whirring sewing machines and smiling faces were the order of the day as Blanco County 4-H members learned the art of making Mug Rugs. Nancy Jordan, 4-H Project Leader, led five members in their selection of fabrics, pressing techniques, and sewing. Each 4-H member made two Mug Rugs to take home.
Shelbi Haynes, of Johnson City pictured right, recently competed at the Texas Wrangler Junior High Division Rodeo Finals, in Gonzales, Tx., June 1- 6th. Shelbi after two go arounds ended up 11th out of 80 contestants in the goat tying event. Shelbi was less than a 10th of a second out of making the top ten, short round, where the top four advance to national competion.
Jace Fry, a student at Johnson City Middle School competed at the Texas Junior High Wrangler Division State Finals in Gonzales last week. Here he roped against the top 80 breakaway ropers in the state. Jace had a little tough luck in the first go roping his calf in 2.69 with a 10 second penalty for a broken barrier.
Statistics indicate that foodborne illness continues to be a health issue in the United States. Each year, 1 in 4 Americans will become sick, 1 in 1,000 will become hospitalized, and 5,000 will die due to a foodborne illness. Blanco County food service establishments are under the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) jurisdiction.

Some athletes started the LBJ Strength and Conditioning Camp this past Moday. The camp is designed for male and female athletes who are participating in competitive sports. The camp is focusing on improving the athlete’s ability to run, jump and change direction quickly. Come and join in the fun Mondays - Thursdays June 8th through July 16 from 8:30 a.m.
