SUSAN + FRANA = TRIPLETS For more than sixty years, their grandparents, their parents, and their siblings have been friends and partners. Nothing can compare to this. Susan Weber Dunaway (LBJ 1998, Texas Christian University, 2002) and her husband, Scott, are the parents of yes TRIPLETS, born on Thursday, May 7 in Laguna Beach, California. Susan and Scott live in Austin; her mother, Karen Weber, lives in Johnson City.

Ellis Linsey and Elissa Johnson were joined in marriage on Sunday, May 17th at the Baptist Church of Driftwood in a traditional double ring ceremony, by Dr. Terry Colley. They plan to reside in Driftwood and spend their summers in Lake City, Colorado.
Mr. and Mrs. John Leatherman of Floydada are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Lindsey Dee to Chad Louis Schaertl, son of Daniel and Laurinda Schaertl of Johnson City, Texas. The bride-elect is a 2006 graduate of Floydada High School and is currently attending Angelo State University where she is majoring in Kinesiology.
The Marble Falls Sunday co-ed softball league is now accepting team registration for the 2009 summer season. Team fee is $150 and games are played on Sunday evenings and nights only. This is a laid back, class D co-ed fun league, no heavy hitters please. The famous Texana Dames and ShAnnie Band – both musical groups that have catapulted their female musicians to stardom – will be featured at ARTS Encounters at Beninis May 30th and 31st. Everyone is welcome to attend this free cultural event held at the Benini Ranch. Shan Kowert and Annie Acton comprise ShAnnie Band, who met, appropriately… at Luckenbach.

Wow!!!! What a great time everyone had at the JCVFD Fish Fry. It was a little hot but managed to cool off with a breeze. This year the department raised just over $42,000 at the end of the day, but after paying all the bills that come along with the event, we will profit $27,000.
Code Blue and Code Blue Jr. participated in the Blanco County Relay for Life in Blanco again this year. Great fun was had by all, in spite of the weather. The Relay for Life Committee did a great job dealing with weather issues, wind issues, and electricity issues. Once everything was finally set up and the event was underway, all the hard work that went on before hand paid off.
Johnson City Woman’s Civic Club members ended the 2008/2009 season in a hilarious fashion. The final meeting was held Monday, May 18th in the beautiful home of Peggy Stewart. The hostesses were dressed as characters from the television series, Hee-Haw, and had encouraged all of the members to wear country and western attire.

Columns

You will not believe how great our trees are beginning to look around here. Moss is being removed and limbs are getting trimmed and the end result is beautiful yards. Our yards are really looking good as people are getting out and planting flowers and displaying their hanging pots of beautiful flowers on their front porches.
Getting ready for a quilt show is a lot different than just going to look at quilts. Jackie and I packed my car on Thursday morning and I was ready to go on Friday morning. Emily volunteered to go with me and help me set up my space for the quilt show on Saturday.
The Scents Of Women And Men
There was a piece on the CBS program ‘Sunday Morning’ last Sunday and it prompted me to think back about the different scents, perfumes, colognes , creams and so forth that I had worn. Today I don’t think women are as connected to a particular scent as they were back in the day.
*****There were fifteen family members who attended the graduation of Colby Will Renfro from Texas A & M University in College Station on May 15. Colby is the grandson of Will & June Dahmann & the son of LaVonda & Craig Renfro. *****Joy Watson, Gertrude Whittington, and Pat Dildine traveled to Marble Falls on Saturday, May 16th.

The citizens attending a meeting at Gem of the Hills were very pleased to hear our county judge, Bill Guthrie speak on the state of Blanco County. The following is a summary of his talk. A few years ago our county budget was in poor shape financially with a high debt and little to no reserves.

North Blanco County EMS is celebrating National EMS Week (May 17 – May 23). National EMS Week was established more that 30 years ago to honor the hard work and dedication of EMS rescue providers. It also serves as a time to show appreciation for all EMS organizations and for the people associated with working alongside EMS.
What? They looked like they were hurt...they acted like they were hurt...but the injuries were as fake as the tornado that never happened! It was all just a training exercise for the Travis County Search and Rescue Team and about 50 SAR team members from various agencies around Central Texas.
At a special called meeting on May 11, the Pedernales Electric Cooperative Board of Directors continued to review revised rates proposals developed by C. H. Guernsey & Company, an international engineering and consulting firm, and recommended by the Board’s Power Supply, Contracts and Agreements Committee and PEC staff. The Board took no action, agreeing to consider additional information prior to determining the new rate structure.
Pedernales River Nature Park in Blanco County, LCRA’s newest park, will open for limited use beginning May 23 between the hours of dawn until dusk. The park is located on U.S. Highway 281 at the northern edge of Johnson City. “Thanks to community assistance from Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC), the City of Johnson City, and Blanco County, LCRA is ready to welcome park visitors,” said David Whatley, LCRA’s manager of Parks Operations.

Farm, Ranch & Garden

Saturday, May 23rd from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be a “HOT TIME” at Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site. The Sauer-Beckmann Farm blacksmith shop will host blacksmiths from all over the Hill Country who will demonstrate their knowledge and talent making turn-of-the-century pieces. The LBJ State Park is located 14 miles west of Johnson City or 15 miles east of Fredericksburg on Hwy 290.
Honey bees are valued as pollinators of flowers, fruits and vegetables and they are producers of honey and wax. Honey is a natural source of sugar for our bodies. With the movement of Africanized honey bees into Texas, it becomes even more important to learn about the Honey Bee. You may encounter honey bees as they forage for food in a swarm or in an established colony.
The Johnson City FFA Wildlife team once again turned in supreme top scores to rank high at their biggest event of the season. The team competed against 50 other teams in the State Wildlife and Recreation Management CDE held in Sinton on May 12. Five teams from each of the 10 FFA Areas qualify for the state contest.

Obituaries

Hazel West Price, age 82, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2009. She was born March 8, 1927 to Henry “Dude” West and Pearl Bagby West in Blanco, living most of her life there. Hazel married Charlie Fulcher Price on March 18, 1945. She was preceded in death by Charlie in July 17, 1998. Hazel wore many hats in her lifetime while taking care of her family.

Donation to Food Pantry Last week’s Johnson City newspaper headlined “Live Theater Returns To Johnson City.” The theater troupe will be performing at the First United Methodist Church, on Saturday May 30 at 7:30 PM. How does a kid rock a croc? Veerry carefully! The youngsters at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City are getting ready for their friends to join them in June for their swamp-themed Crocodile Dock Vacation Bible School adventure. They’ll play and learn five evenings — June 22 through 26 — from 5:30 to 8.

Steven Meier, Ag Science teacher at LBJ High School, was recently honored at the Area II Conservation Awards Banquet in Wall, Texas. The Board of Directors of the Pedernales Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) selected him as Conservation Teacher of the Year for Blanco County and nominated him for the Area II award.
Beth Adams, pictured receiving a check for $100.00 from Rodney Topper of Johnson Sewell Ford, is the JCISD perfect attendance winner for the month of April. Mrs. Adams in an instructional aide for the middle school, and has been with the district for 5 years.
2007 JCCEF Scholarship Winner Completes Second Year at St. Edward’s

The Lady Eagles traveled to Huber Ranch Tuesday night to win the Bi-District Softball Championship against Karnes City with a score of Eagles 8 to Karnes City 1. All of the Ladies played well. The girls had an errorless defensive game and had 11 hits offensively. Everyone was impressed with the talented group of Ladies. Thursday night the Lady Eagles traveled to Shiner to play the defending State AA Champions, East Benard.
