Chief Shane Buck presents Edward Kohlleppel and Paul Penick their Basic Fire Fighter Certificate. Edward and Paul did 167 hours of training to get Basic certified. The Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department has six members going through the training at this time and if they stay with it can be Basic certified by the end of this year.
A portion of the proceeds from the March 28-29, 2009, Texas Men’s State Chili Cook-off and Barbecue Championship was donated to the Johnson City Community Education Foundation to help fund higher education scholarships for JCISD students. Our yard sale was successful. Our thanks go to many people who made it turn out so successfully. Merri L., Rick, Mimi, and many other tenants devoted many hours into setting up the yard sale and following it through to the end. Thank you. The money earned will be used for events for our tenants.
Well, we are taking on I-35 now and there are only three shops left and traffic is hindering us already. It took us a while to get to Cameron Road but we made it. We were the only ones there and we told the ladies that we were on a mission and did not have time to shop, so we just got stamped, got our pattern piece, and of course we got our free fat quarter.
Buddy, A Weapon Of Mouse Destruction
If you have a cat you know that they are probably either lovers or fighters or perhaps hunters. Our cat Buddy, a 10 pound black and white male (sort of) domestic has had his lover and fighter part removed, therefore he is a hunter. He loves to hunt but is rather cruel in that he likes to play with his catch rather than eat it.
*****Things were hopping in Johnson City over the weekend. Over in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church was a Bazaar, BBQ & Garage Sale. This sale benefited the children of the Church for summer camp & to refurnish an activity room for them. They made over $2200. Did you miss the circus? Cousins, Shay Zbytovsky, daughter of Tokpa and Emily Zbytovsky, and Keirsten Sauceda, daughter of Martin and Tracy Sauceda, had front row seats to the best show ever. The girls just laughed and clapped their way through the circus and, of course, had their faces painted.
The day was Saturday, May 2nd , and it was a terrific day for Johnson City Wildflower Days. There was art! There was wine. There were wildflowers. There was a lot of fun. Folks from near and far enjoyed our courthouse square and park and our town. Chairperson Patty Elliot and the Wildflower Days Committee extend a heartfelt thank you to all our friends and neighbors who pitched in to make Wildflower Days a big, fun event!
JCVFD’s 9th Annual Fish Fry will get underway this Saturday, May 9th at the Fair Grounds in Johnson City. Come celebrate our 60 year anniversary with us! The 2009 Blanco County Relay for Life was a huge success. Fun was had by all and a continuously growing amount of money was raised. Thank you to all who participated and helped to make this such a wonderful event! We couldn’t have done it without you! Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Stevenson opened the Stevenson Store in the early 1920s. It served the Johnson City community through the Great Depression and World War II, closing in the 1950s. The store was located on the south side of Courthouse Square at the site where Mr. Chapman’s grist mill had been.

And Then The Rains Came We knew they would, we just did not know when. As the rains began our hearts were filled with happiness and hope. What a joy it is to see all the green in the countryside versus the dead, dying, and brown of months passed. The gardens are in full swing and if you are quiet enough you can almost hear the grass growing.
Texas AgriLife Extension’s District 10 4-H Fashion Show was held Saturday, April 25, 2009 on the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos. 4-H members from 21 counties competed against others their age in categories such as jewelry making and fashion accessories Blanco County was represented by Mycala Jordon, pictured above, who earned blue ribbons for her “Girly Patch” quilt and her quilted Halloween and Easter ornaments.
The Obama Administration’s easing of some of the decades-old trade and travel restrictions against Cuba could prove a boon to agricultural producers all across Texas. “Farm Bureau has long supported lifting the embargoes against Cuba,” said Blanco County Farm Bureau Secretary and Treasurer, Adrian Schulze. “Our organization’s leaders have led efforts to restore these trade ties, which are already paying off in a big way.
On the morning of Wednesday, April 22, 2009 approximately 50 Blanco County citizens braved the wind on Whittington’s Mountain to join the Board of Directors of the Pedernales Soil and Water Conservation District for the 25th Annual Soil Stewardship Breakfast. Everyone was treated to campfire coffee, juice, donuts and breakfast tacos prepared by the Directors themselves.

Obituaries

Kathryn, L. Sultemeier, 88, passed away May 2, 2009 in Fredericksburg, TX. She was born in Gonzales, TX to John and Agnes Horlen. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Alfred Sultemeier, and sister, Evelyn Roark. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Morin and husband Sam of Fredericksburg; son, Tommy Sultemeier and wife Deborah of Johnson City; brother, Fred Horlen and wife Nina of Marble Falls; and four grandchildren, Michelle, James, Leslie, and Ashley Sultemeier.
Sybil Rebecca Casparis Sansom, 86, was welcomed into heaven on Sunday, May 3, 2009 in Austin, Texas after a brief and hard fought battle with colon cancer. Rebecca Sansom (or Beckie as her friends called her) was born in Johnson City, Texas on June 19, 1922. As the baby of her family, she had four older siblings –Johnny, Ted, Madeline and Marie.

School

Have you gone by the LBJ Middle School/Central Office entrance to see what’s new at the school? The new addition consists of a beautiful waterfall and a landscape of rocks and plants. The waterfall was designed and built by Vance Marks with assistance from Dick Wiemers. Most of the medium size rocks were used from a buried rock fence that had been brought in many years ago.

Sports

The dates for the Harper Spring Basketball League have been changed. The league will now start on Monday, May 11 and go thru Tuesday, June 9. The deadline for signing up will be Thursday, May 7. High school boys please turn registration forms and payment into Coach Campbell. 8th grade boys can turn in their registration information to either Coach Campbell or the middle school office.
The 2009 Johnson City basketball camp will be held at LBJ High School from Tuesday, June 9 to Friday, June 12. Students who were in grades 2 thru 8 this past school year are eligible to attend. Registration forms are available this week and can be picked up in the elementary, middle or high school offices or from Coach Campbell or Coach Jung.
