Some local volunteers held a football skills competition this past weekend for the students of JCISD. The skills included passing, punting, and place-kicking. The young athletes competed in four age groups ranging from age 8 to 15. There was no cost for the individuals who competed in the event. Awards for the competition were sponsored by Cattleman’s National Bank.
The winners of the 8-9 year old group were as follows: Garrison Wood won first with a total score of 210 feet. Brett Harris and Wells Deleon both tied for second and third with a total score of 175 feet. A tiebreaker place-kick was held to determine the prospective places. Brett Harris ended up winning the tiebreaker with a better kick.
In the 10-11 year old division, Journey Gonsoulin won first place with a distance of 238 feet. Will Rutherford won second with a distance of 220 feet and Jake Rassett won third with a total of 196 feet.
In the 12-13 year old division, Oscar Alvarado captured the first place honors and beat all divisions with a distance of 387 feet. Garrett Deleon won second with a distance of 283 feet. Preston Workman won third place with 224 feet.
In the 14-15 year old division, Dustin Harvey won first with a score of 302 feet. Van Johnson won second with a score of 246 feet.
Volunteers of the event would like to make this an annual event in Johnson City and make it part of the national competition sponsored by the NFL. In this event, winners of the local competition would be able to advance into area, regional, state, and national competitions. The Johnson City volunteers and the JC coaching staff would like to encourage more youth involvement in this event so “practice up” for next year. The volunteers would also like to again thank Cattleman’s National Bank for their sponsorship of the trophies that were given to the division winners.
Coach Harris would like to thank the following volunteers for their help in setting up and running the event: Cody Anderson, Coach Casey Buass, Donnie Garrett, Chris Liesmann, Earl North, Coach Randy Rutherford, and Keith Ulrich. We would also like to thank Julie Storer, Emily Zbytovsky and Jack Harvey for their photographic talents.
