The drawing will be December 15. Pictured above are Susan Hamm (L), member; and Diane Burke(R ), Chair of the Ways and Means Committee.

The meeting room in the new library building was the setting for the Monday, November 17, 2008 meeting of the JC Woman’s Civic Club. As members visited and admired the new facility, hostesses Beverly Voron, Becky Crider, Dora Brown, Celia Grote and Pam Bonn served a delicious selection of soups from the new kitchen area. Drinks and trays of pecan bars and chocolate squares were also served. Guests for the evening were Catharine Cary, Lois Sturm, Kathy Heffington, Angie Dalton, Barbara Counts, and Annette Krause.

As members and guests enjoyed their dinner, Leanne Haley and Heather O’Brien demonstrated the beautiful art of belly-dancing to Middle Eastern music. Leanne gave an interesting report of the history of this ancient art and described the clothing and techniques of movement.

Following this fascinating program, President Cynthia Keene opened the meeting. The first committee report was given by Diane Burke, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. Diane reminded members that the drawing for the Charglow grill and package of accompanying gifts, worth $1,000, will be held on December 15th. Raffle tickets can be purchased from any Woman’s Club member and at Lights Spectacular for just $5 each. What a great way to donate to the library and have the opportunity to win a nice prize!

Sharon Cofran reported on the Light Spectacular booth. Homemade cookies and candy will be sold at the Woman’s Club booth again this year.

Frana Keith presented a list of library volunteer opportunities. These opportunities, which are open to everyone in the community, include delivering Discovery Academy snacks, presenting a program for a Brown Bag Lunch, assisting with the monthly bus tours, and committing to 2 or 3 hours each week reading to children or working at the desk or in the book stacks. Princess Gruben presented an exciting preview of library program activities planned for the coming months. Beginning in January, 2009, the Johnson City Reads programs will be held in the meeting room of the new library building. Chantilly Lace will continue to provide the delicious desserts. The January book is “The Chosen.” Discussions led by Bill Voron will be on Tuesday, January 6th, 2009. The biggest event will be a bus trip to Dallas to see the King Tut exhibit on Tuesday, February 17th, 2009. This is a one day trip. Anyone wishing to go should contact the library. $25 will hold your place on the bus.

Karen Weber announced that Saturday, March 7, 2009 is the annual Spaghetti Dinner and Bingo fundraiser. She also recognized member Margaret Bamberger and her husband, David, who donated the stone for the new library building.

Betty McNallen reminded members that pavers, to be installed in the outdoor patio area, are still available. Anyone wishing to purchase a paver can contact Betty. After a very interesting and informative meeting, Cynthia Keene adjourned.
