The November meeting of the Johnson City Woman’s Civic Club was held in the beautiful clubhouse of The Preserve at Walnut Springs on Monday, October 27, 2008. Hostesses Betty McNallen, Margaret Bamberger, Ingrid Moursund and Patsy Simpson served a feast of delicious Chinese food : egg rolls, rice, stir-fry vegetables, slaw, and sweet and sour chicken. Of course, the meal ended with fortune cookies for all. Guests for the evening were Lois Sturm, Carolyn Frederickson, Kathy Heffington, and Mae Hernlund.

The Chinese dinner set the stage for the program presented by Frana Keith about the Keith’s recent trip to China. Photos of the Forbidden City and the Great Wall were beautiful and her talk about the various cities she visited was fascinating.

Vice-President Diane Burke presided over the meeting and reminded all members to vote. As Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Diane also presented the newest project – opportunities to win a gas grill from Home Depot. The grill package includes a steak box from Harvest House, $100 Super S gift certificate, and a bottle of propane with one refill. Opportunities to win this great package will be available from Woman’s Club members and at Lights Spectacular at $5 each.

Homemade cookies and candy will be sold at the Woman’s Club Lights Spectacular booth again this year. Sharon Cofran is Chairman of the Lights booth. Joycelyn Carter reminded members that the collectible handcrafted ornaments will be on sale inside the Blanco County Courthouse as always.

Frana Keith passed around a sign-up sheet for library volunteers. Community volunteer opportunities include reading to school children, delivering Discovery Academy snacks, presenting a program for a Brown Bag Lunch, and helping out with the desk and book stacks.

Karen Weber shared plans for the Children’s Theater in the new library building. Princess Gruben announced that the next library museum trip will be Tuesday, November 11 to the Nimitz Veteran’s Day celebration in Fredericksburg. Anyone interested in joining this group is encouraged to call the library soon as these trips fill up quickly. An exciting day trip is planned to see the King Tut exhibit in Dallas in February, 2009.

Library Moving Day is set for Saturday, November 8. All who can help with the move are asked to call Leslie at the JC Library at 868-4469 to sign up for a shift. Coffee, drinks and snacks will be available to encourage the workers. The first Brown Bag Lunch will be at noon on Moving Day Saturday with music by the Hill Country Community Band. After an afternoon completing the move, everyone is invited for hot dogs, chili, chips, drinks, and popcorn at 5pm. Meredith Wilson’s family classic movie, “The Music Man” will be shown at 6pm outdoors on the LBJ Park’s 20x16 foot screen. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and the whole family for this great community get-together.

After congratulating the Lady Eagles Volleyball team for making District play, the meeting was adjourned. See you all on Saturday, November 8!
