Members of the Johnson City Woman’s Civic Club met on Monday evening at the First Baptist Church to begin the 2008/2009 year. Hostesses Charlotte Matthews, Joycelyn Carter, Ronna Owen, Norma Kinchen, and Patty Carpenter prepared a delicious build-your-own taco and rice dish topped off with coconut and pecans. President Cynthia Keene presided over the meeting and introduced two new members: Karen Brugnoli and Bambi Haley, and Patsy Simpson was welcomed back having previously been a member.
Saturday, November 8 is Moving Day for the JC Library! Karen Weber reported that beginning at 9am, everything will be removed from the current Library building on Nugent Street and placed in the beautiful new building on the corner of the LBJ High School. Karen urged everyone in Johnson City – children and adults – to check out books (preferably all from one section on the shelf) in early November and return the books to the new building on or after November 8th. Trucks, big cars, and lots of people will be needed for the move and everyone in Johnson City is encouraged to come. Hot dogs, drinks and popcorn will be available and band music will fill the air. LBJ National Historic Park will set up their outdoor movie theater on the lawn of the new library for everyone to enjoy the classic family musical, “The Music Man.” What an exciting day for Johnson City!
Natalie Voron displayed the new Johnson City Library book bags that are available at the library for a donation of $10. These bags are especially large and sturdy and can hold lots of books. The new library building is pictured on the front.
Betty McNallen explained about the pavers that will fill the patio outside the meeting room in the new Library. Pavers will be available for purchase for a while longer at the Library. Pavers are in three sizes: $50 for a brick size (4x8); $100 for an 8x8; and $500 for a 16x8 block. Inscriptions hand carved into the stones will create a lasting memory.
Everyone was reminded to order books from Amazon by first going to the Johnson City Library website – www.johnsoncitylibrary.org – and clicking on the Amazon link. The JC Library gets a percentage of each book purchased through their website.
Ronna Owen, Chairman of the Float Committee last year, was congratulated for the delightful Woman’s Club float and the 2nd Place Ribbon awarded in the Blanco County Rodeo Parade. Kay Culp displayed the latest antique piece in the ongoing Silent Auction – a beautiful crystal bowl with a silver design. Bids may be placed at the Library where the bowl is on display.
After the business meeting, Diane Burke and Donna Booth presented a fun and unique way for members to connect with each other. Papers were passed out showing two fun facts submitted earlier by each member and teams had to guess which member went with which facts. This was an enlightening and often hilarious way to begin the Club’s new working year.
