This past Friday night the Eagles traveled to Granger to play the Lions. The Eagles took the opening kick-off and Junior Cody Atwood returned it to the Lion 20 yard line. After three running plays the Eagles faced fourth down. Tight end Senior William Bullock cut across the middle of the field to catch a touchdown pass from Quarterback Sophomore Cody Smith. Extra point by Senior Michael Redman. Eagles led 7-0.
The Lions then displayed why they were ranked as one of Central Texas better small schools. They then scored 28 points on several big plays. Even though they scored, the defense played well, having put their offense in several 3rd and long situations. The Eagles scored a very important touchdown just before half time with a toss from Quarterback Smith to Wide Out Sophomore Jacob Sisson. Kick by Redman. Half Time score Eagles 14 and Lions 28.
After half time the Lions received the kick off, but the Eagles stopped them. The Eagles then scored on a 44-yard touch down pass Smith to wide out Sophomore Kris McDonald. Kick by Redman. Eagles 21 Lions 28.
The Lions then went on a long drive using a lot of clock time to score a touchdown. The Eagles answered on the next series with a nice 48-yard run by Sophomore Trenton Rodriguez. He later scored on a 5 yard run for the touch down. The Lions then added one more score to make the final score: Granger 40 Johnson City Eagles 27.
The Eagles ran 42 plays for 239 total yards. Quarterback Cody Smith had three touchdown passes. Cody Atwood carried the ball nine times for 25 yards. Trenton Rodriguez 16 times for 109 yards.
The defense played well sacking the Lion quarterback on five different plays.
The Eagles had ten first downs and only two penalties. Punter William Bullock kicked four times for an average of 35 yards.
JV’s game against D’Hanis tonight has been cancelled by D’Hanis and in its place the Jr. High teams will be playing a scrimage in D’Hanis.
