It seems like quilt shows are the thing for September and October. There have been quiet a few lately and there are several coming up.

This past weekend was the Quilt Show in Fredericksburg. This was a three-day show with lots of things going on. I was not able to go until Sunday afternoon and what a treat it was. I got there just as they had begun a display and talk called “Bed turning”. This term means that there is a speaker and two people to handle the quilts. There is a stack of quilts and quilt tops lying on a bed and as the speaker talks about each one, there are two people to hold up the quilt so you can see. As the speaker finishes, those holding the quilts turn them over and fold them lengthways at the bottom of the bed, hence the term, bed turning.

It was very interesting to hear the stories about all the different quilts and how each person came to be the owner of such a quilt. Some were handed down, some bought from Estate sales, and others made by the owner. I enjoyed this part of the quilt show, as I had never seen anything like this before.

The show had lots of entries, all from members of the Verien Quilt Guild in Fredericksburg. One such entry was from members who are also members of Johnson City Quilter’s Guild and it won a blue ribbon. Nancy Talley and her mother, Freda Baber, worked on a quilt together and it won a blue ribbon. We are so proud of them. It is not uncommon for quilters to belong to more than one quilt guild. This gives them a variety of learning new things each month and the more the merrier, right. Several of our members belong to the Fredericksburg Guild also. We all benefit from this, because they come and share with us something they have learned at that meeting and we hope that they share some things from our meetings with them.

The quilts were all quiet lovely and of course you just walk around with your mouth open because they are so unique and beautiful. You are able to take pictures of them and then you have a pattern to work from if you want to make or try to make that particular quilt. I saw several that would be lovely to make. What a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Remember that Johnson City Quilter’s Guild is having their quilt show, “Then and Now” on Saturday, September 20th at 9:00 am in the PEC Auditorium on Ave. F. We welcome you to come out and see all the beautiful quilts that our guild has made. Watch for add in the Record Courier and get all the details.

Happy Quilting, Janie
