The Blanco County Master Gardeners and Texas AgriLIFE Service, Blanco County will be conducting a workshop on Tuesday, August 19 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The workshop is entitled “Go Native: Landscaping with Native Plants” and will be held at the Exhibit Hall at the Fairgrounds in Johnson City.

The workshop will focus on designing landscapes using a wide variety of Texas Hill Country native plants – from trees, to shrubs and bushes, to native grasses and wildflowers, to perennials and finally to annuals. Many Hill Country residents own properties that have an abundance of ashe junipers and live oaks. This workshop will demonstrate how one can create a more diverse landscape that will be more resistant to damaging diseases and one that is easy to maintain. The workshop will also equip attendees with information on identifying native trees, shrubs and perennials.

The instructors will present information on how to create property and garden solutions that result in lowered maintenance costs through the use of plants that are deer resistant, drought tolerant, have reduced need for pesticides and fertilizers, provide a diverse wildlife habitat and are aesthetically pleasing. There will be live specimens of most of the plants discussed.

There will be a $5.00 fee to cover handouts associated with the workshop. It is not necessary to pre-register, but if you have any questions you can stop by the plant booth at the Blanco County Fair or call Texas AgriLIFE Service, Blanco County office at 830-868-7167.
