The LBJ Lady Eagle softball team fell to the Falls City Beavers, 5-4, in the regional quarterfinal round of the UIL softball playoffs last Wednesday evening, May 7 in a close, hard fought, exciting contest at Seguin High School. Falls City jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning but the Lady Eagles came back to tie the game up at 1-1 after the first inning. The game remained tied going into the 3rd inning when LBJ came up with 3 runs on 4 singles by Katie Wilson, Dana Bushnell, Lauren Fountaine and Jayme Danz.
Falls City rallied for 4 runs in the 5th inning to take a 5-4 lead. The Lady Eagles fought hard the remainder of the game with some outstanding defense and pitching. However, they came up just short of moving on in the playoffs, falling by the score of 5-4.
Wilson, Bushnell and Danz led the Eagles with 2 hits each. Fountaine had 1 hit for LBJ. Haylee Jernigan, Wilson, Bushnell and Fountaine all scored 1 run each. Alex Houston, Bushnell and Fountaine all had 1 RBI for the Lady Eagles. Mae Smith & Kayla Jernigan each drew a base on balls.
Wilson led the team defensively with 9 putouts, 3 unassisted followed by Jernigan with 7 putouts, 3 unassisted and Avry Stolzman with 3 put outs. Danz pitched all 7 innings for the Lady Eagles giving up just 5 runs on 8 hits.
The Lady Eagles conclude their season with a 16-12 record and were area and bi-district champions, a first in LBJ school history. Congratulations to the girls on all their incredible achievements.
