On Saturday, August 22nd, the third and fourth grade Eagles traveled to Llano to take on the San Saba Armadillos. It was the first football game of the season and the first game ever in pads for many of the players. The boys played great!
The Eagles held San Saba scoreless, recording their first shutout. Late in the game Cody Evers sacked the Armadillo quarterback, causing a fumble that Payton Metcalf recovered, sealing the shutout.
Offensively, the Eagles put together two scoring drives with sucessfull PAT’s. On the Eagles’ first possession, Colton Hurlbut pitched to Gabriel Barrientes who scooted around the right side, behind blocking Brinley Portie and Ethan Jordan for the opening touchdown.
In the second half, Gabriel took the handoff up the middle behind nice blocks by Hunter Barrientes, Jaron Pearce and Garrett DeSpain for what should have been a nice gain, but Chance Haley delivered a crushing downfield block, taking out two defenders and springing Barrientes for the touchdown. Cash Pearce added the extra point on a tough run up the middle.
The coaches are very proud of the entire team and look forward to the remaining games! Members of the team are: Logan Ledger, Garrett DeSpain, Jaron Pearce, Hunter Barrientes, Chance Haley, Cody Evers, Brinley Portie, Ethan Jordan, Colton Hurlbut, Gabriel Barrientes, Gavin Thompson, Cash Pearce and Payton Metcalf. While they are only thirteen strong, they play together and with great determination!
