The Johnson City Library and Community Action have teamed up to bring you FREE GED preparation classes. Community Action, Inc of Hays, Caldwell, and Blanco Counties provides adult education programs that span a ten county area in rural central Texas. These services include GED preparation classes, English as a second language, English Literacy and Civics, and basic literacy instruction. The Johnson City Library and Community Action have been working closely for some time in order to bring GED prep classes to the area.

How many classes you attend depends on where you are individually. A series of baseline tests taken during the registration process will determine the level of your understanding. For those with a computer and internet access, software is available for you to utilize at home; however, some classroom attendance will still be required.

Five different GED tests, which are not free, must be passed with a score of 450 or more in order to receive your GED diploma. The purpose of these preparation courses is to ensure a student is able to pass a GED test the first time around, saving him or her both money, time and frustration.

You must be 18 years old or older to register. If you are 17 years old, you will need to have your parents’ permission and a withdraw slip from your high school. Classes will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm til 9:00 pm. The first class will be Monday, September 13th from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm. You must be registered to attend.

Registration is a two-part process which includes orientation and assessment. Both sessions are required. Plan to be at registration 2-3 hours each day. The first registration day is Tuesday, September 7th at 6:00 PM. The second GED registration class is Wednesday, September 8th at 6:00 PM.

You can sign up at the Library Reference Desk. For further information regarding the GED preparation classes, contact Bob Walch with Community Action by e-mail at walch@communityaction.com or call Bambi Haley at the library (830) 868-4469.
