Preliminary counts of 692 students headed back to class at Johnson City Independent School District on Monday morning to being the 2010-2011 school year.
Meet the Teacher night was held last Thursday for Elementary and Middle School. This helped the students get situated and understand the process of the first day better.
High School students were allowed to pick up schedules the whole week prior to classes starting. The High School Meet the Teacher/Open House is scheduled for Friday, September 10th from 5 to 7. There will be a home volleyball game and this will be our first home football game.
Reports from the first few days of school are upbeat. Elementary school Principal Shannon Helmke stated, "We are off to a great start! Things are running smoothly, all the new students are adjusting well and our two new teachers are excited to be on campus."
Both the Elementary and Middle School Campuses are Exemplary Campuses. On the middle school level student/athletes are already underway with football and volleyball practices. Students came home on Monday and Tuesday with paper work for the parents and homework for the students. Everything is in full swing.
The Elementary PTO hosted a back to school breakfast for parents to socialize and get to know some new faces. PTO membership is free this year and their goal is 100% participation. You can visit their website at www.lbjpto.com and download a membership form. While you are there look and see what else you may want to get involved with. They have plenty of events already lined out and just looking for willing volunteers to share their time.
Hope everyone had a great first day of school, with many more to follow.
