One of the 15 historic country schools in Gillespie County will be open Saturday, August 7th. The Willow City School, 2501 Ranch Road, is located on Highway 16 north of Fredericksburg. Turn right on Ranch Road 1323 for about 2 ½ miles you will see the hickory sandstone two-story, three room school building on your left. These country schools with original desks and blackboards were active in the late 1800s, early 1900s. Former students and community members will be available to talk about the former school days of this treasured educational facility, when children were attending the school after consolidation. The open house is planned from 11AM to 4PM. At 1 PM a "42" domino tournament benefit is being sponsored by the Willow City Community Club. For information contact Betty Murphy at 830-685-3836.
Historical information on this school, located on the Gillespie County Country Schools Trail, a designated National Historic Register site, and travel information can be found at www.historicschools.org/willowcity.htm. This school is located within 15 miles from Enchanted Rock.
