Kay Steinbring, a registered dietitian at Hill Country Memorial (HCM), and Candace Ibbotson, MS, CCC, HCM speech pathologist, will lead a free educational program at Hill Country Memorial Cancer Resource Center (CRC) Tuesday, Aug. 10 to help caregivers manage the nutrition needs of home patients.
The class will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the CRC’s first-floor conference room in the Brune Professional Building, 808 Reuben Street in Fredericksburg.
Ms. Steinbring, a Fredericksburg High School graduate who has returned to her home town to share her professional talents, will discuss how good nutrition can help patients rebuild their health, signs of poor nutrition and kitchen hygiene. As a hospital dietitian, she helps HCM patients nutritionally and provides education to assist them in making the transition back to their home.
She will also address special diets for cancer patients, ways to make food more attractive for a disinterested patient and symptom relief for patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.
Ms. Ibbotson, who has 29 years of experience in the treatment of adult and pediatric speech services, will address how to recognize and treat swallowing problems.
The class is the fourth in a series of six designed to help caregivers at home. Upcoming sessions include pointers for managing accurate medical records and preparing Advance Directives and Medical Powers of Attorney (Aug. 17) and practical stress management techniques for caregivers (Aug. 24).
Participants may attend any of the classes. Although there is no charge, reservations are requested for planning purposes and can be made by calling the CRC at 830-990-6648.
