For the past several weeks, Tuesday nights have slowly turned into "Guys Night Out" in Johnson City. Each Tuesday, at 7 pm, the HOME Church gym has been opened for some friendly five-on-five basketball games. Personally, I thoroughly enjoy team sports, and I saw the HOME Church gym as providing the perfect place for filling a need in the community. When I first started Tuesday night basketball, there were just a handful of young men who turned out. We could "spit a lot of game," but the glory years of "driving the lane" in high school are far behind us now. However, the intention behind starting a basketball night for the guys in town, wasn’t to "one up" each other – but rather to help bring guys in JC together to relieve some stress from after work, get to know each other, and create friendships.

In the past few weeks, word has gotten out. There are young men from Super S, Subway, LBJ High School, and a few older fellas from around the community who all participate. The games have picked up their pace (as more athletic legs have made their way to the gym), but there’s still the same friendliness and camaraderie found in playing a few pickup games of basketball after work. You don’t have to be affiliated with the HOME Church to play.

On Tuesday, June 15th, there were 19 guys who showed up. Some were athletic, others like myself… ok… mainly just myself… not so much – but we still have a great time. The doors open at 7 pm and we play until the vast majority of us simply tire out and go home (usually around 9:30 or so). Bring a friend, your ‘ballin shoes and dreams from your glory days.

The HOME Church simply asks that you keep the language clean, and a friendly attitude. Oh, and you might want your bus pass – because I’ll be there… ready to take you to school!
