Heading east on the New York Thruway, I felt a sudden loss of power in our car. Fortunately, we were near an exit and were able to coast down the ramp into a parking area.
After being towed several miles to a small town service station, we received the mechanics diagnosis of our engine trouble.
"I’ve got good news and bad news," he said.
"The good news is that I know what’s wrong with your car. The bad news is that I don’t have the part needed to fix it and probably can’t get one until tomorrow."
This bad news would throw us a day off our traveling schedule and add the expense of another night on the road, but then the resourceful mechanic decided to give repairing our car one more try.
Retreating into the station, this helpful man opened his repair manual again and soon emerged smiling. He had discovered that another part was interchangeable with the one needed and he had that one in stock. Within moments, the newly discovered part was installed and working.
Standing in front of our car with the hood raised, the mechanic and I gazed contentedly at the motor that had been so silent only a few moments before and now purred so smoothly. We were both pleased but he was the first to speak.
"For once, the book didn’t let me down," he said.
"I have a book that will never let you down," I replied.
"What book is that?" he asked.
"The Bible," I answered.
"I believe in the Bible," he added. "What more do I need to do?"
Now I knew why our car had broken down at a place where I would meet this seeking service station employee and tell him that just believing the facts revealed in the Bible was not enough. He must move from accepting facts to exercising faith in the One about whom the Bible speaks.
Then more details of this miracle of timing began to unfold.
"Yesterday a man came in to get his car repaired and talked to me about the Bible for two hours," the young mechanic said, thoughtfully.
"Last night, a friend did the same over dinner and now you show up. Somebody must be trying to tell me something."
What about the mechanic’s conclusion?
Does God sometimes order events in our lives in order to speak to us through them?
Absolutely!
Long ago, the poet, William Cowper, wrote: "God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants His footsteps on the sea and rides upon the storm."
Are you passing through some storm or problem large or small?
Listen carefully.
God may be trying to tell you something
Responding in faith to His love will result in the greatest experience of your life.
