Music from the movies is the theme for the summer’s free family movies at Johnson City’s First United Methodist Church.
The three monthly films are all musicals, pulled from three different periods to catch some of the top musical performers in Hollywood.
The first is the classic, "Singin’ in the Rain", starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor. It’s about the conversion of the motion picture industry from silent films to talkies, or in this case, "singies", and the performers who rode the trend to stardom or found themselves left behind.
"Singin’ in the Rain" shows at 7 pm Monday, June 7, in the church Activity Building. Admission and refreshments are free, as always.
The July show reaches back to World War II to use a homefront-in-wartime theme as a vehicle for the Benny Goodman orchestra and features Carmen Miranda — the lady with the fruit on her head — at the peak of her career. It’s called, "The Gang’s All Here" and runs Monday, July 12, at 7 pm.
The finale is a more recent film: "My Fair Lady", with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison in the musical version of George Bernard Shaw’s interpretation of the Pygmalion legend about an artist who falls in love with his own creation. See it at 7 pm Monday, August 9.
All shows are free and everyone is welcome.
