Don’t Miss: The painted churches in tiny farming communities surrounding Schulenburg are the treasure of Fayette County. They include Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Dubina, St. John the Baptist in Ammannsville, St. Mary’s in High Hill and St. Mary’s in Praha, known as the mother church of Czech Texans. All date from the turn of the 20th century and feature soaring steeples that can be seen for miles.
But it’s church interiors that will take your breath away. Nearly every inch of the wall and ceilings bursts with vibrant color. There are vivid frescoes and murals depiction saints and angels, faux-marble columns, stenciling, intricate woodwork, arched Gothic Revival windows and magnificent stained glass. You’ll feel like you stepped into another era. Stop by the Johnson City Library to sign up ($15 fee) for this trip.
