The Johnson City Eagle baseball team won first place in the annual Johnson City tournament held this past weekend. The Eagles managed to keep their undefeated record intact as they won three games against Harper, Round Rock Christian and Florence.

In the first game of the tournament, JC faced the Harper Longhorns and defeated them by a score of 15-0. Treyler Caulfield started on the mound for the Eagles and pitched a 2-hitter while striking out 7 Longhorn hitters in the shortened 10 run-rule game. For his excellent performance on the mound and timely hitting during the rest of the tournament, Caulfield was selected to the All-Tournament team.

Offensively the Eagles were led by Dylan Carter who went 3 for 3 with 4 RBI’s. Luke Neely and Cody Smith added 2 hits each as the Eagles collected a total of 10 hits for the game. Laramie Blackwell, Cody Crofts and Kris McDonald also added to the Eagle offense by collecting one hit a piece. By winning this game, the Eagles advanced to the winner’s bracket of the tournament to play the Round Rock Christian Crusaders for the right to advance to the championship game of the tournament.

In the second game of the day, the Eagles came away victorious once again by defeating the Crusaders by a 14 to 2 score. Cody Smith handled the pitching duties for the Eagles, firing a one-hitter and striking out 8 Crusader hitters. Smith joined Caulfield and was named to the All Tournament Team for his one-hitter and hitting performances in other tournament games.

Leading the offense for the Eagles in this game was Kris McDonald. McDonald went 2 for 2 and was the only Eagle with a multi-hit performance. Other Johnson City players who managed to hit safely were Cody Crofts, Ryan Franklin, Cody Smith and Laramie Blackwell.

In the championship game of the tournament, JC faced a very competitive Florence team. The Eagles were able to defeat the Buffaloes of Florence by a score of 7-3. Laramie Blackwell came through once again as he did in the previous tournament with a strong performance on the mound. Blackwell did allow the Florence hitters to scatter 6 hits but struck out 9 and then allowed the Eagle defense to help him in Johnson City’s sixth consecutive victory. This hard fought victory earned Blackwell all tournament honors also. Blackwell not only got it done on the hill but also went 3 for 7 at the plate during the 3 day tournament.
