In February, the Blanco County Cat Coalition (BCCC) had a very successful month, in part by coming to the aid of many feral cats in the Johnson City area.

A total of 23 cats were trapped, vaccinated and neutered. Nine were taken from behind the Johnson City Post Office on Avenue G. There were five males and four females. The females were carrying 22 kittens. If BCCC had not stepped in, there would have been a total of 31 cats trying to survive behind the post office.

An additional eight cats were taken and returned from the Roadrunner RV Park. In this case, there were an equal number of males and females. Fortunately, in this case only one female was pregnant, but the other three were in heat and would have become pregnant soon.

Another five cats were trapped outside the city limits.

The total cost to the Blanco County Cat Coalition for this service was approximately $550.00, the lowest charge currently available for assisting a total of 23 cats. BCCC receives no money from the city, the county or the state. Look for our donation cans at many local businesses, or send a check to Blanco County Cat Coalition, P.O. Box 757, Johnson City.

BCCC strongly encourages people to have their pets neutered. If there are other cats on your property that are "not your pets," but you feed them, it would be a community service for you to step up and have them neutered, too. We can only "fix" the overpopulation of cats and also dogs in our county by having good citizens "fix" pets and stray or lost animals. Call the Cat Phone—(512) 318-5875 to report the location of a feral cat colony in Blanco County. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

BCCC is a tax-exempt, 501-c-3 volunteer-based organization that supports the humane way of dealing with feral cats: Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Donations and volunteers are needed and appreciated. Volunteer opportunities are varied and interesting. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month, alternating between Blanco and Johnson City. All are welcome to attend. Call the Cat Phone at (512) 318-5875 or visit the BCCC web site, www.blancocountycat.org, for further information.
