The Johnson City Eagle Baseball team won first place in the Navarro Tournament this past weekend. The Eagles beat Poth, Lago Vista, and Luling to win their first 3 games of the season. Johnson City’s first game was a 17-4 victory over the Poth Pirates. Cody Smith started on the mound for JC and went 3 strong innings scattering 3 hits. Luke Neely relieved Smith in the 4th inning to close out the game, giving up only one hit and striking out 4 Poth hitters.
Leading the JC offense was Luke Neely, Dylan Carter, Treyler Caulfield and Laramie Blackwell. All 4 hitters collected 3 hits a piece in the 18 hit attack. Kris McDonald and Cody Crofts each had 2 hits a piece and Cody Smith added another hit.
In the Eagles second game, JC defeated Lago Vista by a score of 8-1. Laramie Blackwell handled the pitching duties for the Eagles by hurling a complete game. Blackwell had a perfect game going into the fifth inning before giving up a blop hit to right field. The Vikings managed only one more hit in the seventh inning. As Blackwell completed his 11 strikeout - 2 hit game.
Offensively, the Eagles collected 8 runs on 8 hits. Luke Neely and Kris McDonald went 2 for 3 to lead the Eagles to win #2. Also collecting hits were: Dylan Carter, Cody Smith, Treyler Caulfield, and Aaron Humphrey.
In the championship game on Saturday, Johnson City defeated the Luling Eagles 14-4. Kris McDonald started on the hill and went 2 1/3 innings giving up only 2 hits and striking out 3. He was relieved by Luke Neely who finished the 5 inning - 10 run rule game. Neely was able to strike out 4 as he scattered 3 hits to secure the victory for the Eagles.
Three players from Johnson City received all tournament honors. Blackwell earned all tournament as a result of his pitching performance in game #2. Luke Neely and Dylan Carter also received an all tournament selection by going 11/21 at the plate between the two of them.
The Eagles started the year as good as it gets with a 3-0 beginning. They will host the Johnson City tournament this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Johnson City will face Harper at 1:00 on Friday and will play the winner/loser of Round Rock Christian and Center Point either at 4:00 or 7:00 on Friday.
