Last Thursday, February 25th JCISD Elementary school was going about classes as usual when a mini van bumped into the exterior of one of the classrooms.

A parent went into the school and left a 3 year old child in the vehicle while it was running. The child put the car in drive and slowly coasted into the side of the building. No one was hurt and only minor damage was done to the outside of the building.

Students in Mrs. Sultemeier’s second grade classroom did not miss a beat. They were quickly moved into a nearby classroom. "I’m so proud of my students and their quick response to my directions. It’s a nice feeling to know that staff members and students are prepared to handle real life safety situations," stated Mrs. Sultemeier.

District maintenance staff and the Fire Chief evaluated the building for structural integrity and all other safety procedures were followed.

Elementary School Principal Shannon Helmke would like to thank the JC Police Department, North Blanco County EMS, Mr. and Mrs. Burdett and JCISD staff members for their assistance. She would also like to commend Mrs. Sultemeier and her students for responding to this situation in a timely and professional manner.

JC Police Department cited the parent with an unattended child in a vehicle that carries a fine of up to $500. The school district has not filed any additional charges at this time. JCISD insurance company will be looking into restitution to repair any damage done to the building.
