Growing a library takes many different gifts and lots of time, energy and money. It is important to acknowledge that a community with a library is a healthy community, a community that has hope and a future.
Come do your part to support our community by attending the Library Benefit Spaghetti Supper and Bingo on March 6, 2010 at 5:30 PM. You can be a part of the fun and frolic of this annual event and help the library at the same time.
I asked a few locals why they come to the event and this is what they said.
Socializing: "The spaghetti supper and bingo night is fun. You get to see a lot of people. It’s the thing to do around here kind of like going to church on Sunday and brushing your teeth each night. You just do it!" Irma Nell Simpson. Yes, it is the thing to do on March 6th because you will have a great evening out with your friends and neighbors and you will have a good meal prepared and served by members of the JC Woman’s Civic Club.
Playing Bingo: "I love to come for the spaghetti dinner, but did you know that the first time I ever played Bingo in my life was at a Bingo Benefit for the library?" Paul Sumrall Yes, it is the thing to do on March 6th because you will be able to play Bingo for great prizes.
Shopping: "I’m a competitive person at heart, so shopping at the silent auction is always fun to me. There are always great things to bid on and, of course, it helps the library." Patty Elliott Yes, it is the thing to do on March 6th because you can bid against others for the great treasures we have this year in the Silent Auction. You can go to www.jclibrarysite.org to look at the silent auction items or you can visit the library to look at them in person.
Supporting the Library: On the side porch of the JC Library, there is a paver with this quotation inscribed on it: "Libraries are not made, they grow." Augustine Birrell, 1850-1933. The quotation from an English scholar and politician was selected by Mae Hernlund of Round Mountain. Mae is one of many donors who helped make it possible for Johnson City to build its new library. Mae’s interest in libraries began long ago because she served as a librarian for the Austin Independent School District before her retirement to Johnson City. Yes, it is the thing to do on March 6th because it will help the library continue to be a strong presence in Johnson City.
So whether you are coming for the food, the fun, the fellowship, the prizes, the auction or the community spirit…come to the Library Benefit on March 6, 2010.
