The January meeting of the Community Garden Club of Johnson City was held in the beautiful home of Barbara Counts. Members were treated by Gus Sanchez, Chief of Interpretation and Resource Management - LBJ National Historical Park, to a presentation of "Remembering Lady Bird Johnson". Gus focused on the 60’s era, a pivitol point in U.S. history, pointing out historically and environmentally significant legislation enacted during President Johnson’s administration. Known throughout her life as a tireless advocate for conservation and environmental causes, Lady Bird Johnson was a founder of the Garden Club and holds a special place in the hearts of Garden Club members.
President Pearl Hedlund presided over the business meeting. A high point was the news that the Lights Spectacular Courthouse craft and ornament sale was again a huge success. As you may know, this event is the largest fundraiser for the Garden Club and proceeds are distributed to worthwhile organizations in Blanco County. Craft days have already begun for replenishing the depleted crafts and anyone is invited to join in making new creations. Contact Joycelyn Carter or any Garden Club member for times and place. Among other projects, Dumpster Diving leader Ola Matus reported increased income from the Garden Club recycling bin.
At the conclusion of the business meeting, the drawing was held for the Lights Spectacular Cookbook autographed by Lady Bird Johnson. Raffle tickets for the cookbook had been sold throughout Lights Spectacular. The winning ticket was purchased by Ann Seyler of Austin, a Lights Spectacular visitor. Ann was notified by President Hedlund and was delighted that she won, commenting on the wonderful, friendly people of Johnson City.
Members were treated to wonderful refreshments and as they dispersed, were reminded of one of Lady Bird’s many quotes, "Where flowers bloom, so does hope".
