The Johnson City Library is pleased to invite your child to enroll in the Johnson City Library Discovery Academy, an after-school enrichment program offered in partnership with the Johnson City School District. Into our third year, the Discovery Academy serves students in the 3rd through 5th grade with hands-on math and science enrichment activities through experiments, visuals, projects, and field trips. The Discovery Academy will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 until 5:15 beginning on Tuesday, January 19th.

Each semester a $50 fee will be charged to cover the cost of supplies for all of the experiments and activities. Scholarships are available.

Get out your magnifying glasses because the spring session students of DISCOVERY ACADEMY are going to be real SNOOPS! Our first investigation will be archeology, or the study of past human life and culture. We’ll start in ancient Egypt and learn to write in Hieroglyphics; create our own pyramid; and figure out, how did they make those mummies? Then we’re off to ancient Greece and Rome where we’ll study the difference in their architecture and build an ancient temple. Of course, we’ll stop on the open sea and find out what those pirates were all about. We can’t leave out the Americas and the Mayans and Incas that were so… mysterious. And just to tie together things from last session, we’ll see what animals were around back then.

Ever wonder what science and math have to do with crime? Well, get out those magnifying glasses as we study forensics, the science of investigating crimes. Save that old toaster, radio, or clock, because next we’ll study what makes things tick? We might even get in a little physics, and make our own machine. So put on your white coat and meet us down at the lab for this exciting and fun session of DISCOVERY ACADEMY!

Enrollment will be limited to 15 students per classroom and up to 45 total students. Enrollment forms may be picked up at the Johnson City Library or at www.jclibrarysite.org

All registration forms and supply fees should be turned into the Johnson City Library. The deadline for registration for the fall semester will be January 12th.
