Dear Editor,
Since last week’s edition went to press, I learned exactly how our house was saved from the grassfire of the 26th and who was responsible for saving it. This is a wonderful story to share with our community and to give commendation where it is well-deserved!
We were not home when the call went out at about 2:50 p.m. to our local volunteer firefighters.
Whitney Liesmann responded, taking out a truck on his own and heading down our road. Since his vehicle could not negotiate the rockier terrain, he kept going until he reached our place which was surrounded by the fire.
Without taking time to put on a mask, Whitney began spraying the fire which had reached our pole barn. He continued working for some 30 minutes in the 105 degree heat, spraying 150 gallons of water alternating between the barn and the house. He continually battled as the blaze jumped the road numerous times and finally stopped it just a foot from our house!
He was finally relieved by backups from Blanco and later in the day was treated for heat exhaustion.
We positively know that Whitney’s efforts saved our home!!! So, when you see Whitney in town, please join us in commending his valiant
efforts!!
Thanks again to all who continue to check on us out here in the fire zone! This is a wonderful community! Thanks to God for his protection and guidance.
Blessings,
David and Jan Garrett
