Johnson City ISD trustee Cynthia Keene has earned the designation of Graduate upon completion of Leadership TASB, a program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). During the fifth session, June 18-20, school board members in the 2008–09 Leadership TASB class made presentations of their team’s findings following yearlong research. Class participants selected topics related to public school finance including the historical development, current situational distinctions, other state models, and possible solutions.
The Leadership TASB class met in conjunction with TASB’s Summer Leadership
Institute in Fort Worth. Almost 1,000 new and veteran school leaders received in-depth training on every facet of effective board governance, heard keynote addresses from renowned education experts, and picked up valuable ideas from district showcases and networking opportunities.
The keynote speaker for Leadership TASB was David Warlick, owner and principal of The Landmark Project, a professional development and innovations firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. After the graduation ceremony June 19, participants joined the ranks of more than 500 school board members statewide who are Leadership TASB alumni.
The 2009 Leadership TASB class, composed of 31 school board members, represents Texas school districts of all sizes and property wealth. Participants who completed all required elements of the study program earned Master Trustee or Graduate status, the highest designations recognized by TASB.
TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school districts.
School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve approximately 4.7 million public school students.
