LBJ Elementary School’s 2nd and 3rd graders studied how to shop for food. This included what is good for our bodies, what to look for in value, and how to determine what product is best. They arrived at Super S with $5 each to purchase food. They proceeded to make their selections to be donated to the Johnson City Food Pantry. The result was a large selection of canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned pasta with meat, and soup. There was not a single soda or piece of candy. One young lady included baby food in her selections because she had a baby in the family and knew that babies need to eat also. They were smart shoppers.
On June 22, 2009, the students presented their donations to the Food Pantry. This was followed by a question and answer period of how the pantry operates. There were many well thought out questions of how to tell if food is spoiled, does the pantry look at date codes, and do we look at package weights. It was a great visit. We were impressed. 60 years ago, when we were their age, we would have never been able to do as well as these children have done.
On behalf of the Johnson City Food Pantry, we would like to thank you.
Betty and Jerry Charniak.
