Wow. 36 kids, 15 adults, a 7 hour bus ride to the ranch 5 miles west of Alpine, two hikes, a 3/4 mile trip back to the bus standing in a stock trailer, Pizza Hut in a hail storm, an hour bus ride to the Observatory (straight uphill except for the hairpin curves), heavy cloud cover, then the skies allowed the gemini twins to peek out, then Saturn, then a brilliant clear display of millions of stars with each of us peering at the heavens thru giant telescopes. 11:00 p.m., back to the ranch, cattle trailer, and bed rolls on the floor and front porch by 1:00 a.m.
Up at 6:30, egg/sausage/bread casserole, orange juice and milk (equal quantities drunk and spilled), two loads of bodies and baggage in stock trailer back to bus, back to Observatory, big telescope, lunch, a second 7 hour bus ride, DQ at Junction; home 8:00 p.m.
A fabulous experience made possible by the generosity, energy and enthusiasm of Jan and Harold Skaggs, the excellent planning of Bambi Haley, the patience of Discovery Camp leaders-mothers/grandmother-chaperones (plus one father and one grandfather chaperone). For all of which we can uniformly say “Thanks be to God”.
