*****She did it again! Irma Monger Sanchez and her husband, Gus Sanchez, participated in the Blanco County Relay for Life, held on Saturday, April 25-26. The relay was a great success. Irma completed her age (plus one) in laps (76 laps), which is 19 miles, all for a good cause. Congratulations, Irma!

*****Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department held their Annual Fish Fry and Raffle Fundraiser on Saturday, May 9th at the Blanco County Fairgrounds from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. There was plenty of delicious food and free beer. There were also many raffle items and both a live and silent auction. Of course, it was a resounding success as usual.

*****Tidbits from the Fish Fry - the Hacker family, Carrie, Jeremy and Katie and Maddy made an appearance at the Fish Fry and ate their share. Mary and Donnie Garrett had a ‘date night’ first at the fish fry and then on to Blanco for some wild bull riding. Jerry Ann Buck is looking good and has lost a bunch of weight. June Dahmann and Cora Byars were manning the dessert tables as usual.

*****Alexus Crochet and friends had a swim party at “Aunt” Rhonda Stell’s on Friday the 8th. After lots of splashing and fun, the party went to Marble Falls for pizza and midnight bowling. Happy 11th!

*****Larry and Alice Driggers have been enjoying their friends, Don and Barbara Dierberger, from Payson, Arizona for a week!! The four of them have been very busy going everywhere! The trip to Cabela’s was so much fun. They also had some great meals at their favorite spots. They even got in some great fishin’.....always have to make time for fishin’. On Mother’s Day the “Boys” fixed a beautiful supper of barbequed ribs and shrimp for the “Girls”. So much fun.......................

*****Chamber of Commerce held their regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 11, at 5:30 pm at the Community Park Meeting Room.

*****Pedernales River Nature Park opens for limited day use on Saturday, May 23. Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) announced in this past week’s email newsletter, Currents, that the Pedernales River Nature Park is prepared for limited public recreational day use, such as fishing and picnicking, starting May 23, with hours from dawn until dusk. Pending the park’s future development, typical LCRA access and facility use fees will be temporarily waived. As with other LCRA nature parks, admission fees will be charged and rental fees collected when the new recreational facilities are constructed and available for public use. *****Joy Feuge and Pat Stokes enjoyed getting Mother’s Day gifts from Chris Stokes, Edwin and Elizabeth Sooter. They also received calls from all of their other children - Danny, Cheryl and Kathryn Feuge, Garner Sooter and Randy and Sunnie Humphries for Joy. And Curtis, Angie, Emilia, Micah and Rebekah Sudduth and Will Stokes called for Pat. Edwin and Elizabeth spent a day running around San Marcos at the outlet mall and going to Cabelas to do some shopping. Edwin also took Elizabeth out to Logan’s Steakhouse for dinner for her Mother’s Day gift.

*****Alan Gray and Scott Crofts coach a 12 & under select baseball team with young men from Blanco and Johnson City. The team has been invited to Cooperstown, New York to play in a tournament at the Cooperstown Dreams Park from July 18th thru July 24th. They would also have the opportunity to attend the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and see a game at Doubleday Field where the 1st baseball game was played in 1839. Each player of the team will receive a Hall of Fame ring as they are inducted into the National Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.

*****Former Johnson City resident Louise Baker & her friend visited our town on Saturday, May 9. They visited several friends, had lunch with Pat Dildine, and went to a few shops.

*****Larry and Suzanne went to Houston on Thursday to see their grandson, Will Traylor of Austin, play in a state baseball championship. Will is a freshman at Marine Military Academy in Harlingen and is on the Leathernecks varsity baseball team. MMA lost the games but Larry and Suzanne had a great time with Will and his team, coaches and parents.

*****As Cynthia Smith was being treated to a Mother’s Day breakfast special at El Charro on Sunday, in walked Kinky Friedman chewing on his trademark cigar. He looked around to see if anyone recognized him and then placed his order for Migas. Donnie Garrett was there solo and treated his in-laws to breakfast. When they told Donnie there was a celebrity in the building he said, “Who’s Kinky?”

*****Chris, Tammy, Wythe & Wren Liesmann celebrated Mother’s Day at the UT baseball game with Longhorns versus Aggies.

*****Melissa Wood, Emily Zbytovsky and Tammy Liesmann participated in the Chuy’s Hot to Trot 5K Saturday in Austin.

*****Johnnie Denton, daughter of Leonard & Doris Denton, has finished with her classes for the semester. On Thursday, grandmother Elizabeth Bible and Doris went to Waco to help Johnnie pack her stuff so she could head home for the summer. While taking a break from all the packing they had lunch at Chili’s and after finishing the job they all returned home that evening.

*****On Mother’s Day Leonard, Johnnie and Zachary Denton took Doris to San Antonio to eat some wonderful Chinese food. After eating they did some shopping while there.

*****You might be a Johnson City native if you can remember when John J. Thurman was football coach and Superintendent of Schools at Johnson City Independent School District.

*****Tip for the week: Plastic coffee containers are great for painting. There’s a nice handle to hold onto, & if you need to put the brush down, you can put it under the rim & it will stay there. When you’re finished, there’s a nice tight cover to seal the unused paint.
