Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,And, Dear Betty, I actually believe that it was sometime between God and Mr. Jefferson “that it was determined that all men are created equal.” Yes, “one person’s opinion is not more important than another’s.” Unfortunately, that includes yours also and it is fundamental to our Fourth Estate that you and everyone else, so inclined, be welcomed to “publish or perish.” To suggest, as you did in your letter to the editor last week, that this newspaper censor a citizen by keeping a running total of how many times they have written a letter to the editor and limiting them to “once a quarter” is disturbing. I would also imagine that Emily and the rest of the Record Courier staff would be horrified at the prospect of carrying the burden of deciding who’s voice is silenced based on mathematics. Most disturbing and perplexing is how you think: “In order to maintain our democracy it would be just for the newspaper to institute a policy regarding the number of times each citizen is able to contribute articles yearly to this column” — will maintain our democracy? A free, vibrant, active press is the most important and vital part of a healthy democracy. Anything that stifles or arbitrarily regulates freedom of speech and the free flow of information via our press is inimical to a free, democratic society. Respectfully Betty, I suggest you keep writing Letters to The Editor as often as you like and the rest of us will carry on also. Good be on you,Kevin Tully
