Stonewall Head Start Afterschool Program

A Message from the Stonewall Head Start and Community Preschool Center Director: Kimberly Porter, M.ED

Stonewall Head Start and Community Preschool has now been operating an Afterschool Program at the First United Methodist Church for a little over two months. The children and staff have gotten into a great routine and are busy with several projects. The children have made plaster of paris hand prints, finger print Christmas trees, and several other “gallery” quality pieces of art. Many of these are on display in the Afterschool Program rooms.

It is hard to believe we are at the end of 2012, but have truly enjoyed our experience in our “new home”. It is such a joy to see the children’s faces as they exit the bus eagerly looking forward to the afternoon.

As an enhancement to the program, Stonewall Head Start has been working with TOTs (Teams of Tomorrow), a preschool basketball program that focuses on academics, social skills, and physical movement. Emily Hicks (“Ms. TOT”) from Mason is the teacher.

The TOT program meets every Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the FUMC’s Activity Center, and the children are taught a variety of skills, including letter recognition, body awareness, and basic ball handling skills. We are looking forward to the TOT’s upcoming performance during halftime of Johnson City’s basketball game. The date is set for January 18th during the 6:30 game. We are excited to see all the skills the children have learned!

We would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you in 2013!
