Of the typical requests for information that cross my desk each week, this was perhaps one of the most unusual. Cydney Woods of The Wish Connection contacted us asking if we could round up a resource person for an event she was planning for early December. In 2006, Cydney and a group of fellow San Antonio-based AT&T employees launched The Wish Connection, a non-profit organization with a special mission.

The City Council of Johnson City met Monday, December 18th, 2012 in special session. The first item up for consideration was possible action regarding amendments to the Building Ordinance. Council felt more information was needed regarding the proposed amendments to the ordinance; however, since the city attorney was not present, their concerns could not be addressed.

Post Offices nationwide will be open Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24 and New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31. Most Post Offices will shorten retail lobby hours and close at noon on these days. Regular mail delivery will be unaffected by the change. Revised hours will be posted at each Post Office and commercial customers are asked to check with their Bulk mail Entry Units for specific information regarding holiday hours of operation. The Community Church of the Hills will have a special Christmas Eve service of candle and carols. The service of scripture readings and carols will begin at 6:00 on December 24. Community Church is located off Towhead Valley road just 2 miles west of Johnson City off highway 290. The public is invited to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Cindy Leonard, RN, (Wesley Nurse) does our chair exercises and the next ones are for December 27th 2012. Everything starts at 9:30 am and screening will still be available every Thursday. Screening will be done right after the exercises at 10:30 am. This all happens at the Johnson City Housing Authority at 304 S.

*****Monday night Edward and Mary Weirich, as well as Mary’s daughter Joelle Roberts-Johnson, attended the concert of the sixth grade band of Kelly Lane Middle School in Pflugerville, of which granddaughter Savannah Elkins is a member of the clarinet section. All were very impressed at how well the 226-member band performed, especially since this is their first semester playing their instrument.

The cast and crew of Johnson City’s Living Nativity Pageant could see a chance to break their attendance record this year after about a thousand visitors came the first weekend. Alas, Friday’s chilly drizzle held down the second weekend’s crowd, ending with more than 1,700 in the audience over the two weekends, close to the record but not quite breaking it. RyanCole was diagnosed with leukemia 3 years ago. He has been receiving treatment in Austin since the diagnoses. Treatment includes oral chemotherapy and spinal chemotherapy since the diagnoses. RyanCole enjoys two things in life golf and hunting. The Taylor family invited RyanCole to spend a week with their family in the hill country.

Start the New Year off right by visiting Blanco State Park for a nature hike and a fascinating look at birds of prey. Begin with a one-mile hike along the Caswell Nature Trail, taking time to discuss plants and animals along the way. This is a part of Texas Parks and Wildlife’s statewide effort to show that life’s better outside!

Robbin Koehler is the new Nurse Practitioner at the Ramsey Clinic. She was hired October 1st, 2012 and has since been establishing herself as a valued and dependable alternative to a visit with Dr. Ramsey. Ms. Koehler graduated this past May from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a license as a Nurse Practitioner.

The Master Gardeners of Blanco County will be holding classes for new members beginning January 8, 2013. There is still room for a few more students. Soil testing, without question, is one of the most important, most effective and yet, most under-utilized—best management—practices available to agricultural producers. Assessments in some areas have indicated less than 20% of the land receiving fertilizer is soil tested on a regular basis. At the same time, fertilizer prices have increased tremendously over the last 10 years and in some cases by more than 200 percent.

Nelda Lou Taylor, 72, of Kempner, Texas, passed away November 28, 2012 at Hill Country Nursing Home in Copperas Cove. Nelda was born February 23, 1940 in Santa Anna, TX, the daughter of J.F. Strickland and Martha (Richey) Strickland. She attended elementary school in Snyder and graduated from Midland High School.

A Message from the Stonewall Head Start and Community Preschool Center Director: Kimberly Porter, M.ED Stonewall Head Start and Community Preschool has now been operating an Afterschool Program at the First United Methodist Church for a little over two months. The children and staff have gotten into a great routine and are busy with several projects.

The LBJ Eagle varsity boys basketball team played four games this week and came away with 2 victories. On Tuesday, December 11 LBJ traveled to Faith Academy in Marble Falls to play the Flames. The Eagles led throughout but the Flames kept fighting back. LBJ put the game away in the final minutes to earn a 51-44 victory.

The Lady Eagles Varsity Basketball team competed in the Medina Tournament over the weekend. They played a very tall Leakey squad and played really hard but lost 66-32. The Lady Eagles had a rough 1st quarter, allowing 22 points and only scoring 1, however they started playing their game and the remainder of the contest was pretty evenly matched.
