Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. Maybe Christmas, he thought... doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps... means a little bit more! The LBJ High School Theatre Department put on their rendition of How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Monday night. Those in attendance where enchanted by the performance, young and old alike.

The lighting of the Christmas tree at LBJ State Park and Historic Site has become a time-honored tradition, in this its 43rd year—an event started by President and Mrs. Johnson in 1970. Park visitors can enjoy performances of holiday music, a live nativity scene, a visit from Santa Claus, and the hallmark lighting of the Christmas tree near the park headquarters complex this Sunday, December 16 starting at 6 p.m.

The City Council of Johnson City met Monday, December 12th, 2012 in special session to consider possible further legal action in the City of Johnson City v. Lindig suit. The city has received the verdict from the Texas Court of Appeals reversing the trial court decision to award summary judgment in favor of the city.

The school board of JCISD met on Monday, December 10th, 2012. During open forum, local parent Matt McKennis requested that at least one of the school gyms be available for use by the public. His daughter plays volleyball and could use the facility to practice. Further, other students could make use of the facility to both play and/or practice a sport.

On December 6th a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for our newest chamber member, Summit Blanco LLC at the entry to their fabulous project “The Summit at Cypress Mill”. The Summit at Cypress Mill offers premium, large acreage home sites within a private, gated community providing endless mountain-top, 360-degree panoramic views of the spectacular Texas Hill Country.

The Fourth Annual “Sing Christmas” with Joni Topper and Scott Crofts is Wednesday December 19th from 6:00-9:00 pm at First Christian Church. This come and go event will be the perfect way to relax and enjoy the beauty of the season. On December 1st, 2012, The Hill Country Spurs horse judging teams along with some members of the Johnson City FFA team traveled to Rosenberg, Texas to compete in their first competition of the year. The teams judged six performance and two halter classes. The HCS junior team of Kalli Dalland, Paige Dalland, Willow Grote, and Dooley Smith collected many first place ribbons.

The Highland Lakes Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists (which includes members from Blanco, Burnet and Llano Counties) held their annual Holiday/Awards Banquet in Blanco this past week. The gala affair was held at the Old Blanco County Courthouse and over 100 people (members and their spouses) attended. The annual party is held to celebrate not only the holidays, but to recognize members for their volunteer services to their communities.

Members of the Pleasant Hill - Rocky Community Club are announcing the distribution of $6,700 raised at this year’s annual benefit dinner, the Smorgasbord, which was held on November 3rd. As in previous years, the major donations went to the North Blanco County EMS ($1,250), the Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department ($1,250), and the Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department ($1,250).

It is December 10th, 2012 and it is cold. I do like the change of weather even if it is somewhat cooler. The good thing about Texas is we will have warmer weather in a few days. Cindy Leonard, RN, (Wesley Nurse) does our chair exercises and the next ones are for December 18th, 20th, 27th 2012.

We are bombarded during the holidays of ads on TV for expensive electronics, clothes, watches, even cars. I have never even thought to ask Santa for a car, do you think I was good enough this year to get a new car? Mercedes SUV please! Well holiday gifts can be easy and cheap, and just what Aunt Jane wanted.

I just called my daughter, Mary to tell her I have to unwrap a few of the gifts for her and her sister because I don’t remember if the right gift is in the package for Mary or Jenni. There are just some things a person my age shouldn’t even attempt without a list!

The Blanco County Community Choir performed their annual Christmas Program Friday night at the Community Church of the Hills. The free concert featured “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” along with many other lovely songs. The audience was invited to sign along to a few of the more traditional hymns.

If the weather and crowds hold up, this may be a record attendance year for Johnson City’s Living Nativity Pageant. The crowds for the outdoor performances at the First United Methodist Church totaled just under 1,000 for the first weekend, sending organizers back to the record books for the previous attendance figures.

Mr. Clifford Schumann passed away Tuesday, December 4th, at the age of 84. Donald L. Downs, age 60, died on Sunday, 2 December 2012. He died of natural causes while bicycling on a ranch road in Johnson City, TX. He is survived by his wife Josefina “Josie” Dominguez, a teacher at LBJ High School; a sister Debbie Eaton and her husband, Mike; and a brother Dave Downs.

Lance Allen Haley, 45, passed away December 5, 2012 in Johnson City. Lance was born November 20, 1967 in San Antonio, TX to Patsy Ann (Riba) Haley and James Cleveland Haley. He graduated from Johnson City High School in 1986 and then pursued his career in the wholesale automobile industry in San Antonio.

Louise Sarah (Meier) Rowe(February 8, 1936 – December 9, 2012) Mrs. Louise Sarah (Meier) Rowe, wife of Roy Jemmie Rowe, Jr. of the Post Oak Community, Blanco County, Texas passed away in Johnson City, Texas on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the age of 76 years, after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Dear Editor: If you missed the Library Celebration on Saturday afternoon, you missed a wonderful treat. There was a tree to trim, crafts for the kids, a Johnson City Fire Engine to visit and talk with a Fireman and great chili hot dogs and hot chocolate. The Christmas concert by the Hill Country Community Band was just terrific and sure put those of us who were there in a great holiday mood.

Free state-wide photo contest is accepting submissions now. Take a creative photo of Christmas lights in the State of Texas and submit to the “All About Texas Christmas Lights Photo Contest.” First Prize is an iPad. 2nd, 3rd and 15 Honorable Mentions will also receive prizes. The contest is open to amateurs, professionals, children—anyone.

KERRVILLE, TX – December 10, 2012 — The Hill Country Chapter of the American Red Cross has distributed over 90 space heaters since November 1st. With the cold front that arrived last night, the chapter is asking the public for help in securing more. Last year, the chapter gave local families one hundred ninety eight (198) heaters.

We learn from the Hebrew writer that the Law of Moses foreshadowed good things to come (Heb. 10:1). The Old Testament is full of types and the shadows cast by our Lord Jesus who would be the substance and fulfillment of each shadow. Such is the case in Numbers 21 when God’s people became very impatient as they traveled through the wilderness.

The Johnson City Eagles boys basketball team sprinted out to a quick lead over Our Lady of the Hills on Friday evening and ran away with a convincing 47-15 victory to improve their overall record to 4-4. LBJ used their pressure half court defense to force 12 first period turnovers by OLH and the Eagles converted those turnovers into numerous fast break points to give themselves a commanding 22-1 lead after the first quarter.

The 7B Lady Eagles did a great job in defeating their rivals from Ingram on Monday night, 12-7. “The girls worked hard and hustled the entire game,” Coach Trujillo said. Alicia Guerrero was the top player with 8 points. The 7A Lady Eagles won a hard-fought contest over the Ingram Lady Warriors, 29-27 in their third game of the season.

The Eagles struggled taking care of the ball, but through great defense and a better transition game, they pulled off the 22 point win against OLH last Friday with a score of 40-18. Brooke Wood was the Player of the Game with 10 Points, 9 steals and 3 rebounds. Other notables include Whitney Wood with 8 points and 12 rebouunds, Kiley Wood with 6 points and 5 rebounds and Audrey Capra with 6 points.
