The Blanco County Commissioners Court held two meetings on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, and all four commissioners were present. The first meeting was held at 9:00 am and addressed the GovDeals bid of $2,625.00 for the 2002 green Crown Victoria. No action was taken at the present time. The second meeting opened at 10:30 am, also with all four commissioners present.

Technically, something has to happen twice to be called annual, so this was the year Johnson City’s Community Potluck Thanksgiving Feast became an official annual event. About 200 people showed up at the First United Methodist Church to enjoy turkey and dressings and tables full of side dishes prepared by volunteer cooks from the community.

The Good Christian Strip Set has donated its first round of hand-made quilts! Nathan and John Axtell helped deliver five quilts to the SAMM Shelter. The SAMM Shelter is a non-denominational homeless shelter and transitional housing shelter in San Antonio. The Shelter requires those in the transitional housing to attend job training, finance, and parenting classes.

Izzie is a jet-black gallery cat that lives at 105 N. Nugent St. She is a feline celebrity of sorts. Photographers from all over the state have enthusiastically photographed Izzie over the last two years. The images of her will be on display at the A Smith Gallery on Nugent, right next door to Truvy’s Salon, until December 30th.

Holiday camp is a great time to keep kids active during cold winter months, and Hill Country Memorial (HCM) Wellness Center’s Holiday Camp aims to do just that. Coinciding with the school Christmas schedule, the camp will be from Dec. 26 – 28 and 31 and Jan. 2 - 4.

Maybe you were not here when we had a full fledged Turkey Festival with turkeys in the street, a parade, cooking contests, and a Turkey Queen. There was a contest for who would be the first Turkey Queen and I won! Ok, there weren’t many entries. Ok, there were only two entries and I won.

Cindy Leonard, RN, (Wesley Nurse) does our chair exercises and the next ones are for December 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 18th, 21st, 27th 2012. The last week of November will have no exercises. Everything starts at 9:30 am and screening will still be available every Thursday. Screening will be done right after the exercises at 10:30 am.

*****The Johnson City Library is having its annual book sale Friday, November 30th through Saturday December 1st. This year they have included a bake sale and a bazaar sale. Good time to pick up some Christmas goodies and small gift items. The sale is Friday 10 am - 7 pm and Saturday (half price day) 10 am - 1 pm.

The kids on the First United Methodist Church float Saturday night depicted the angels’ announcement to the shepherds that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Chief angel Tessa Fields was strapped to a steel post for safety, but not even costume wrangler Paige Whittaker could get Daniel Axtell into a shepherd outfit.

Carolyn Marie Zurovec, age 85, passed peacefully to the Lord on November 14, 2012, at her home with family by her side. Throughout her life she was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother (Babicka), and wonderful friend to many. Carolyn was born on October 6, 1927 in Cistern, Texas to Alex and Frances Vinklarek.

Dear Editor, I was quoted in the November 15th newspaper. I was not misquoted, but something was left out; I also included that an alternative should be considered (maybe an article from the Board on what the Board is doing, both the positive and challenges, and what it will be facing in the future.

Therefore, it is logical to believe that one person’s opinion is not more important than another’s. Dear Editor, The recent tax hike in Johnson City property taxes accompanied by a consecutive two month decline from prior year sales tax revenues point to the urgent need for Johnson City to commit to and take action on economic development. We cannot afford to wait any longer. The impact of this year’s budget needs was softened by the council agreeing to take funds out of reserves.

No one wants to believe a disaster could happen in Johnson City, but the reality is a disaster could happen anywhere. The 7th Grade B Lady Eagles lost a close game to their rivals down the road, the Blanco Panthers, 8-9. “All the girls played hard and hustled the entire game. They are learning a lot and working on the fundamentals every day,” said Coach Trujillo. Alexis McDougal led the team with 4 points.

The LBJ varsity boys basketball team traveled to Junction last Tuesday evening, November 20 and came back with their first victory of the young season with a 33-19 win. LBJ got off to a solid start leading 9-2 after the first period and 17-7 at halftime. The Eagles played outstanding defense throughout the game and that continued in the second half as they limited Junction to just 3 points in the third period.
